I know US News ranks it #20, but aren't Georgetown, Berkeley, Tufts, Carnegie Mellon, UCLA, and University of Virginia more prestigious?

I think Emory does lack the name recognition of some of those other schools. I live in Texas, and probably about 50% of the people I meet have never heard of Emory. I think that is because it's only been recently that it has begun getting recognized as a prestigious University.

That being said, if you even begin reading about Emory and take a visit there, it's easy to see why it's rated so highly. The fact that Jimmy Carter has an office on campus speaks in and of itself. I'm not gonna go into it all, but if you read about everything that Emory has to offer (the Carter Center, Yerkes Primate Research Center, plus the CDC, etc. etc.) it becomes easier to appreciate the school for what it is. It all comes down to this: the students seem to get a damn good education there, and there are a lot of opportunities on par with or even better than those at more "prestigious" schools. Plus, the campus is beautiful.

Emory really only became the university that it is today because of Diet Coke, and coke's huge success in the 80's. After that money was dumped into the university it shot up the rankings and turned into one of america's top universities basically out of no where (just like NYU). Also the south isnt exactly known for it's great schools, and emory has no sports recognition like wake or duke. If money is continued to be pumped into the university and kids from the east and west continue to matriculate there is no reason why emory won't be as recognized as chicago or northwestern and as desireable as NYU in 5-10 years. Emory is to people from ga as princeton is to people from new jersey, just to give you a southerner's perspective....very expensive and very prestigious.

Doggra--we're in Texas, too. I would say 90% of the people haven't heard of anything but UT and A & M. :p

texastaximom- i know exactly what you mean. in my senior class of 1400 kids, i'd say probably more than half only care about UT, A&M, or Tech (if even that one). A lot of people asked me where Emory was when I told them I got in, and I was kinda surprised. In one of my friend's physics class of 24 people, 17 are going to UT.

I wore an Emory t-shirt to school one day and a girl came up to me and asked, "Is that supposed to say Memory?" I'm from FL and a school where probably 95% go to an in-state or community college.

"I wore an Emory t-shirt to school one day and a girl came up to me and asked, "Is that supposed to say Memory?""

--lol :)

Lol it looks like weve kind of digressed from the question. Like every one of these topics. But I would say that the name recognition is not yet there for Emory, especially the farther away from Atlanta you get. That will take a number of years. However, the programs and educational level of the school is up there in the top 20. That's my opinion anyway, from what I've read or heard. Ask me again when I graduate.

Shoot, people who know about prestigious colleges know about Emory. Im from a prep school in FL and most people know that Emory is right up there with Gtown and WUStl. If youre goin there, be proud because youre going to a school thats ascending. I know I am.

DUKE > Columbia > CAL > University of Michigan > USC > UCSD > NYU

uclover8, i think i know what you mean. i got into duke and emory scholars, and i think i'm going to go to duke. i have a friend on intermural lacrosse there, and i think the overall atmosphere is just better there.

NYU>UCSD

alan greenspan is an NYU alum

it is one of the top 20 schools, but it lacks name recognition....thus it can not be presigious, in a sense, since no one has ever heard of it, especially where i am...CALIFORNIA...similar to deep springs, which is one of, if not the best school in the country, but no one has ever heard of it

How can anyone personally rank any of the American colleges by their prestige? First of all, how do you define prestige? Even if you can define it, how does it affect your personal college education? Do you select school based on how many of your friends and relatives have heard of the school? If so, go to your state university, all your friends have heard of it. Many people, including the President of Stanford, have problems with the USN&WR ranking because although it tries to be objective in using measurable statistics, it would not be able to measure subjective factors such as how attentive the professors are or how fulfilling the graduates feel. So, please stop asking strangers which school you should attend. There is no magic formula. And please stop posting those school1>school2>school3 postings. They serve no purpose other than to feed the authors own egos.

Someone mentioned that how Emory is today is because of Coke money, I would say that it is far better than tobacco money.

about 90% of the people i talk about emory to haven't heard of it and dont know where it is. if they do know about it half the time they know its a great school, but the other half think its "historically black" (i guess since its in atlanta) or an "all girls" school.

thank you 7figures.
i heart you.

Before I began the college search, I admittedly had never heard of Emory.

But now I know of it because they sent me stuff after I took the PSATs in high school. Along with the Ivies and such. They had a shield and respectable serif font on the envelope, so I opened it.

Even though I don't go to Emory, I know of it and think highly of it. As time progresses, this (and continued demographic flow to the American South) will work in Emory's favor.

Emory is definately in the top 20, although its at the bottom end of it. Anyone who matters that will be considering where you went to school as far as jobs or graduate schools or anyone of high academia will know that in comparison to other prestigious universities Emory is at the least comparable. Frankly, what a bunch of high school kids have heard of or not as well as what the majority of the american public has heard of has no bearing on a school's prestige.

prestige is stupid, emory is awesome. (as a sidenote most people from my school have heard about it and it has a great rep here... although when i mentioned it to one kid who is positive about applying early decision to duke, he was like what's MRI? kind of ****ed me off because it just makes it so obvious that he's applying to duke for the name. how can you already be positive that youre applying early to duke and not even know what emory is? talk about a lack of college research)

that said, while i agree with 7figures about the prestige thing, i dont see a problem iwth the college comparisons here. i think its helpful to ask people who know about the colleges youre comparing (key word: know, as in not people who are just randomly speculating but people who actually go there or have done a lot of research on the same 2 or 3 colleges that you're comparing). a lot of the stuff on this website is pointless, misinformed, and downright obnoxious, but for the few knowledgeable posts you may get in response, it can be worth it. and fun when you're bored/procrastinating :)

I think emory is soo popular in georgia is that all of the smart georgia kids go to either emory or tech because of hope scholarship. It is a really good school though and I'll be applying this fall!!! (btw-I live outside of atlanta).
