so i'm a HS student and love math and physics. i love to understand concepts. i haven't really considered many majors other than engineering. i don't know if i'll like engineering though, because throughout my life, i've hated doing repetitive things. on one hand, it sounds like engineering would be kind of cool because i enjoy computer science (using the theory and mainly focusing on solving problems and being creative). but on the other hand, when i picture myself in the future as an engineer, i can only picture myself hating my job. is engineering more monotonous and repetitive, or does it pose interesting problems and challenge you.
i think i would rather major in physics or something but then there aren't good jobs until you get a phd or maybe masters. what do you think?

The jobs out there in computer science are all over the place. There are many jobs that aren't the most exciting in the world but there are lots of employees that are fine with that. If you're raising your kids and they need some amount of attention, you don't want the most exciting job in the world.

On the other hand, there are high-growth jobs, jobs where you work 80 hours a week and may be on a fast promotion track, project leader jobs, project management jobs, etc. In the normal project life cycle, there are many phases with a variety of tasks so it shouldn't be the same thing all the time.

I'd sugget that Behind the Code series (on iTunes) from Microsoft - it's a bunch of video interviews of about a dozen top leaders from Microsoft.

My opinion is that engineering is the least repetitive occupation you can find! Engineering is about solving problems, and once you have solved a problem it is solved - so you move on the next. No two problems are ever the same. I had no idea what engineering was when I chose my major, I just knew I liked math, physics and computer programming. I am really glad I chose this, because I get a lot of satisfaction from knowing that I am making a difference, and it's really fun! That does not mean that I love everything about my job (I hate writing reports). But even the parts I don't like are not monotonous.

Talk to more engineers. See if you can visit any facilities in your area. Engineering is not for everyone, but I have never heard of anyone turning it down because it is monotonous!

i'm feeling much better about engineering now. thanks for your opinion!
