Is French 4 = 4 years of language?

My sister is a senior in high school. In her freshman year she took French 2, sophomore year French 3, and junior year French 4. Question: Does she have to take AP French in her senior year to meet the four year language requirement some colleges have or does French 4 count as 4 years? Thanks!

No. That would be counted as 4 yr of French already as she took French one in middle schools.

But does the French she took in middle school count in high school? How is the language requirement calculated? I’m sorry but I don’t want to give her the wrong advice that’s why I’m asking this. Thanks

It’s truly up to the schools she’s applying to, but may I ask which schools REQUIRE four years of a language? A lot of them recommend 4 years, but I don’t know of any that require it. Even so, it’s up to the college to interpret whether French IV qualifies as four years of french or not.

French 4 = four equivalent years of French. She is fine.

My son loved Latin so much that he finished Latin I, II, III, and IV in two years. But he could still say he completed four “years” of Latin.

Usually, highest level completed is what matters. So completing French 4 counts as level 4, regardless of how many lower level French courses are listed on the high school record.

Thank you everyone!

A college’s language requirement or recommendation refers to level completed and not actual number of years taken during high school. Moreover, if middle school is in same district as high school, the high school transcript will usually show high school level language and math courses taken in middle school.

Our district considers the three years of middle school FL to equal one year of HS FL. Odd, since the middle school classes meet daily, but that is their policy. Similar to the OP, the fourth year of a language taken consecutively would be completed in Jr year. The district does not include any middle school classes on the HS transcript and there are some students who enter 9th grade taking Algebra 2.

For math and foreign language, the number of years refers to the level completed. So, French 4= 4 levels of French. 4 years of math = up to precalculus or calculus. If calculus is completed in the 10th grade, the student has completed the required number of “recommended” years.
“recommended” means: it’s required unless you attend a very rural school or a very poor school that does not offer the upper level class.
