Handlebars, if you had an A- why take it P/NP? I assure you regardless of your gpa, a P looks nothing like an A.

A GPA of 3.3 does not make your medical school chances look good:
https://career.berkeley.edu/MedStats/MedStats.stm

Better have a backup plan if you do not get into any medical school.

^There are always “lower-tier” med schools… ;)

Also, I disagree with people saying that P is seen as a C. That’s completely inaccurate. A P is seen as a P. That’s it. If you take a bunch of relevant courses P/NP, that’s a problem. If you take a few courses P/NP and have a 3.9 GPA, no one is going to give a hoot…And if those few P/NP courses helped you maintain that 3.9 GPA, more power to ya.

@ucbalummnus
i’ve only taken 2 pre-reqs so far… i feel liek i have time to pull my gpa up

@MissJay and Batman17

First of all, it’s just a breadth class guys… It doesn’t relate to my major at all. I doubt Haas or employers would give a **** about some random asian american studies class I took, they’d only care about my ability to do well in accounting, econ, etc.

I seriously believe you guys are over-thinking it. I agree with Kevrus, a pass is a pass, I doubt a rational person would just jump to the conclusion that I was getting a C.

Also, at the top of the scale, a difference between an A- and an A is substantial. overall gpa: 3.92 vs. 4.0 was my dilemma. That’s pretty significant to me…

Perhaps it would also be relevant to mention that I was taking 5 classes, each 3 or 4 units, an above-average course load. So I still ended up with 4 letter graded classes

opted for letter grade…got a b+…

If you’re aiming for med school you should probably p/np anything lower than an A-

shoulda listened to me and taken it for a P

What about a science/math oriented course ,like math 54? If I take it p/np will med schools care even though I completed the calculus requirement already with A’s? I am an mcb major by the way.

you would already have the math requirement, this would look like you wanted to explore some additional math which is the primary purpose of P/NP. Might come up as a question, one I would handle by taking exactly the line above with the interviewer.

Ok, so it won’t act as a dealbreaker and keep me out of med school as long as I frame it in the way you suggested?
