I understand honors colleges are pretty difficult. So I was just curious if they are worth the effort?

another question/scenario. Say I get into a lesser known or respected college like Virginia Commonwealth University. Would getting into their honors college be a must because VCU is a lesser known school?

I dunno, inform me about honors colleges as much as u can.

I think it all depends on school. Some honors colleges/programs aren’t that much more than the normal college, others are extremely tough. The good thing is that almost all of them have ‘perks’, be it special dorms, priority registration, maybe a scholarship.

I think the most important thing is to see what extra opportunities you would gain by joining honors. Perhaps better chance to study abroad (if that appeals to you), or even just better connections. Perhaps easier access to undergraduate research, which is a nice plus.

My opinion, no. From my perspective there really is not a whole lot of benefit for all of the extra work. Employers care about your GPA, and most of the time you are guaranteed to take a hit here with an honors program. Graduate schools are the same way. Unless you are capable of keeping your grades up in the honors program it is definitely not worth it. Even if you can keep your grades up, it will usually come at a cost. Where you might have been involved in ecs, enjoying your college years with friends, etc., now youre cutting into that time with more school. Despite what many people think, employers almost always take a socialized student over a book worm.

I’m in the Honors program at my school, and the only extra work is a few special classes and a Senior Thesis. It also makes scholarships more plentiful, research more accessible, and comes with other perks such as early registration, extra counseling, etc.

I mean, you only get to do undergrad once. And most programs will let you bail out of Honors if you decide it’s not for you. Why not give it a shot and see how you like it?

I go to a big school (~30,000 undergraduates) so the smallness of the honors program I’m in is a huge plus. Normally I’m sure I’d be amongst different groups of people in all of my classes and my dorm etc., but with honors classes and honors housing, nearly all of my classes (Freshman year anyway… fewer honors classes are available after this year) are composed mostly of one core group of people that I also live in the same dorm with. It’s really like going to a small school within a school and I love it. There are also other perks such as year-long book checkout from the library, etc etc. Yeah I’m sure I’ll take a slight hit to the GPA overall but in my case it’s totally worth it.
