My family supports me 100% but many people have told me that going to the US all the way from the Philippines is too ambitious, considering that I will be moving all the way there. I know that I really want this, but to the people that did end up going to the US for college, is it really worth it? I have all the financial support, I just want to know if the quality and experience is worth to leave everything behind.
No one will really know how your experience will be.
There are thousands of schools in the US.
It depends on the college and depends on your expectations.
I think you have to weigh what you’ll gain against what it will cost.
And, no, I don’t mean just the financial cost, though of course that has to be a primary consideration.
But you’ll be in a foreign country, far from home. If you get sick, mom and dad can’t swoop in to take care of you. If you’re sad or lonely, the comfort will have to come from the phone. Likewise, if something big happens at home-- the death of a grandparent or the engagement of a sibling, the odds are good that you’ll miss it. Customs, attitudes, experiences and expectations (not to mention details like weather and the monetary system) in the US are likely to be very different from those you grew up with.
That said, there are so many schools here that it might be the adventure of a lifetime. Assuming you find the right school for your hopes and plans and background and personality, it could open doors that might otherwise never have opened for you.
So I guess my question is this: WHY do you want this so badly? What do US schools offer that you can’t get at home?
I think that question will put you on the right track to finding out what you want to know.
Good luck!
just because others don’t think it’s worth it for themselves, doesn’t make it less worthwhile for you.
Why do you want to go?
American colleges are small communities that offer many advantages few other university systems offer: depending on the college you choose, you could have small discussion-based classes, and/or have access to research and help a professor in a lab, and/or take a wide variety of classes. In addition, residential colleges are designed to encourage young people’s growth in all dimensions, not just through classes but also through activities and experiences.
This is pretty unique.
Is it worth it? Only you know.
