I am from Canada, and REALLY want to go to school in the states, even if it's just a community college. I want to transfer to a proper university afterwards. But being from Canada, I know it does sound stupid to fork out 17000 to go to a cc in the states, paying hiked up fees and living expenses. I understand there really isn't a NEED for me to go to school in the states, especially just for a community college where there really isn't any difference in the quality of education. But I just feel I would be so much more motivated, happy, etc. going to school in the states vs. being "stuck" here in Canada. All my of my future goals involve living and working in the states. And you only live once.. I don't want to put off living.

So is this a dumb reason to go to school there? Are there other pro's and con's you guys can think of? Please offer some opinions!

Thanks!

As a prospective international student myself I can assure you that studying in the US does not mean you will get to stay and work/live there after you graduate. If you have decent grades and can achieve a good education in Canada, you should take that.

The best way to accomplish this is for you to go to a respectable university, get involved and earn your way to a good company that is willing to offer you a job in the US. I have heard that Canadians have it easier moving to the US but even so it’s not totally granted (need someone else’s knowledge about this).

You might think you will be more motivated and happy, etc. but you should realize that after your studies you would have to go back to Canada and you would be ‘stuck’ again.

I seriously do not think it’s worth the extra money but at the end of the day it’s still your call. That’s just my two cents.

Andrewheat is on absolutely on target. And you are correct, it is stupid to spend USD 17k or more for a community college just because you imagine that you will have more fun here than in Canada.

All the Canadian parents that I know here in the Washington, DC suburbs do their very best to get their kids into Canadian universities because they are so much cheaper than equivalent universities in the US. Plenty of non-Canadians in this area head North every year for that reason as well.
