Is graphic design right for me?

I do like working with computers, blending pictures, taking pictures, and using different fonts. All of that intrigues me but I have very little experience. First off, I'm a bad drawer. I like playing around in photoshop but have not made any huge projects. I am going to a media/communications college where there program is very competitive. I got in because I applied for the Video/Film major. I sent in a movie that I acted poorly in, and got accepted. I realized I didn't like editing videos so I switched my major to graphic design. In the fall I will be attending school and I'm starting to get freaked out. Should I be really artsy? Should I download a bunch of programs or do some tutorials? How should I prepare?

Any help would be great, especially from graphic designers or those majoring in the field. Thank you.

Software has nothing to do with graphic design; it's only a tool. There is a book called Visual Grammar, buy it. It's 2-D design fundamentals. but in the end that's what it boils down to. Yes, learn the software because it is a necessary tool, but it won't teach you how to design.
