Is Green and Gold really that bad?

I got assigned to Green and Gold Village which was previously frat units. I've heard horror stories and people telling me that I am doomed since I got assigned housing there. I've heard that it is dirty, and that there are pests etc. I'm really worried since I have extreme phobia of bugs, especially cockroaches. Is it really as bad as people claim it is?

Our daughter is going to WM this fall too and was assigned Yates. But, she heard they spent the summer fixing up Green & Gold. Don’t know if that is true, but you would think that converting the frats to regular dorms would require some rehab.

The Units (aka Green and Gold Village) are notoriously the worst dorms on campus. However, now that the frats have moved out, the quality should improve somewhat. I have no idea if they’ve cleaned them up or not, but if your room is dirty (and has bugs), you can improve it greatly with a vacuum, a Swiffer duster, some Febreze, and a can of Raid. I got stuck living in nasty basement levels for my first two years, and I survived. You will too. Really, how clean or dirty your room is depends on you. The bathrooms might be…not so nice, but they are cleaned to some degree weekly.

Even if it’s not the best situation, it’s only for a year. You’ll be fine. Trust me.

Our S spent last year in The Units. He survived just fine. No bug issues, bathroom clean. His dad spent a year in The Units in 1982. He also survived  The above post has great advice to improve your stay.

It will not be the same as far as dirt, broken items, etc. No doubt they spent time fixing, cleaning and painting after the frats moved out. That said, the size of the rooms (small) and the amount of natural light (I think many rooms have only one small window…could be only some of them) is there to stay.

Best advice is to go in with a positive and friendly attitude - and get out on campus! Find other places to study, hang out, etc. if you are not happy with being in your room. Also, I imagine you can bond with your hall mates over your shared Freshman Dorm experience  The units are set up will lots of common areas to make it easier to meet those around you.

And the best advice was already given: The cleanliness is up to you…a cleaning schedule and can of raid goes a long way

In a side note…I wonder how long it will take current students to refer to the Units as the Green and Gold Village and worse…The Ho House to One Tribe Place (??..isn’t there already a Tribe Square? )

^In regards to your side note: years.

The college recently changed the name of “flex points” to “dining dollars.” But nobody I’ve ever met calls them “dining dollars.” Nobody. So the Units and Ho House will probably remain the Units and Ho House until at least all the current students have graduated. And yes, there is a Tribe Square.

probably as long as it took the UC to become “Sadler”

I have a similar question but instead about botetourt. I am living in fauquier. Everyone that I meet at wm said that botetourt was the worst dorm and has a roach infestation.
