Just got our housing assignments today. I'm in a triple at Greenough. Can any current students tell me anything about it? It seems really far from the other freshman dorms...

I actually like the fact that’s farther away in a quieter, more residential area close to Lamont, so you won’t have to go through the trouble of navigating through the tourists everyday to get to class. From what I’ve been hearing from a friend, people in Greenough also liked to stop by each others’ rooms to chat, and the overall place had a great dorm spirit (but I think she’s just biased ;)). The downside is that it takes a while to walk from Greenough to the Science Center or Annenberg, so make sure you don’t forget to bring anything on your way to class.

(Welcome to campus :)!)

Well I’ll be there with you next year so we’ll make it great. :)

yes we will!! so it’s closer to where our classes are? i’m in a triple with 2 rooms. do you know how big the rooms are, what they’re like, etc? sorry for all the questions!

My friends in a two-room triple in Greenough had one room bedroom for everybody and a common room where all their desks were.

The closets tend to be tiny, so plan to buy under the bed containers, or use suitcases under the bed for storage. Greenough has small elevators which is nice for move-in/outs. It also has charm, with old wood stair rails, nice painted pale gray moldings and creamy off white paint in the rooms, hardwood floors and nice bathrooms.

It is very quiet, well away from the continual hourly chiming of the bells of Memorial Church in the yard. There is a shortcut to Annenberg via Prescott St, Broadway, and the fire station. Also the Broadway Market is just around the corner for extra treats. And, laundry in the basement.

so one of the rooms sleeps 3 people?

There are many different Greenough room configurations: singles- one tiny room for one person, doubles-one room for two people, and then multiple rooms for multiple people. The roommates decide what the function of the rooms will be–some opt to have every one sleep in one room, and have the extra room for desks and social space.

I was in a triple in Greenough!

Pros:

quieter than the Yard; no annoying tourists, etc (people in Straus will find that the Hahvahd tours wake them up every day at very early hours).

marginally closer to some upperclassman houses, so that you have a slightly shorter walk if you choose to stumble drunkenly back

close to Lamont. fun fun fun!

you’ll get some exercise; if I were in Canaday, I’d have gained tons of weight from a) not walking a lot and b) going to Annenberg all the time.

bigger rooms than some other dorms (Holworthy is pretty sweet, though …)

washing machines AND condom supply in the dorm. score.

ping pong table, kitchen (with microwave included, assuming that they fixed it… someone broke it last year)

Cons:

far from stuff. you’ll often feel out of the loop from not living in the Yard.

hall bathrooms, unless you’re in one of the six-person suites on the end. not too terrible, but not ideal.

the common room is pretty sucky aside from the ping pong table; the TV is small and in the corner and feels kind of like a hospital, and the room is just kind of dreary as a whole.

community isn’t as good as some other dorms - at least, last year it wasn’t. parts of my entryway were very tight, but honestly i still don’t know the names of the people who lived at the end of my hall… yeah.

Triple-specific information:

Some of the triples in Greenough are pretty big. We decided to put all of our beds in one room and make the other room the common / work room, which worked pretty well. You almost certainly won’t have to have bunked beds in a Greenough triple.

Also, I don’t know what you mean by small closets. I had a walk-in. Woot!

If you’re on the side that faces the street, you’ll have big, beautiful windows.

Basically, any dorm is fine. Greenough’s not the worst. It’s scenic and pretty, and you’re extremely close to H. L. Gates’ house. Have fun!

Thanks guys for posting all of this info!
