Is it? I mean, why not Princeton or Yale? WHY HARVARD? What makes Harvard better place than two other places or just any other colleges in general?

I'd say cambridge.. but what do you think?

i don't think harvard is necessarily better. it's just a better fit for those who decide to apply.

Wow. This is the umpteenth thread on this topic.

Let's just say what the OP wants to hear: Yes, Harvard is overrated. It sucks. I can't believe it's considered the #1 school in the world, honestly. What makes it deserve that?

To tell you the truth, I think a lot of it has to do with Harvard being founded first in 1636 I believe. I can tell you that the asian perspective, which I find extremely narrow-minded and disrespectful, is always 1. Harvard, 2. Yale, 3. Princeton.

well. try 1.harvard 2. princeton 3. stanford

^That could very well be it when you look at the dates (not necessarily as the sole factors but I'm sure they contribute). I'm just speculating--I don't really know that much about Harvard.

or even 1. harvard / stanford 2. princeton/Gtown

"I can tell you that the asian perspective, which I find extremely narrow-minded and disrespectful, is always 1. Harvard, 2. Yale, 3. Princeton"

no, not really. I know tons of asians whose first choices were MIT, Princeton, Cornell, and other top schools and didn't even bother applying to Harvard. Asians used to have a narrow-minded perspective back then but now these days everyone knows what they're doing.

In the long run- i don't think which undergrad you go to (assuming you can get within the top 10 (?) REALLY matters all that much. Will a hard working Cornellian (frequently viewed as a 'safety' ivy) do just as well as a Crimson. Probably- the fact is no one is going to care which Ivy you came from 5 years post-graduation. It's gonig to be your character, work ethics, and job experience that's going to matter.

what's OP?

Original poster....in otherwords, the creator of this thread.

"I can tell you that the asian perspective, which I find extremely narrow-minded and disrespectful, is always 1. Harvard, 2. Yale, 3. Princeton."

It is quite rash to make general assumptions like that, and somewhat "narrow-minded and disrespectful..." Agreed with ihavenolife.

Dogminate I'm asian myself and I find that when I speak with some of my other asian friends and their parents, this tends to come up. Of course I completely disagree with the notion and it does not apply to much of the asian population. It is just a trend which I have seen come up a number of times from my experience.

i'm not asian but have many asian friends and what bigenvelopes said, i find this to be true as well.

lol.I am asian too, and from a Chinese's perspective, I would say. lots of ppl in China only know Harvard, Yale, and MIT.plus Oxford and Cambridge in England.

The prestige...it's basically common knowledge that Harvard is the top and most selective school in the entire world. You can get a great education at the other Ivies, but at Harvard you get a great education, great opportunities due to the name (notable visitors include Oprah, Ali G, Conan O'Brien, the Dalai Lama, and Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad), entry into the most prestigious and influential alumni network, and the gift of not having to explain why you are going to X instead of Harvard.

I'm still applying to MIT anyway; even though Harvard is the greatest school in the world, MIT is the greatest institute of technology in the world. Choosing between the two will be so difficult!

dude...if the reason you think Harvard is so great is because..(and I quote what you said)................"notable visitors include Oprah, Ali G, Conan O'Brien, the Dalai Lama, and Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad".....You need BIG HELP in my humble AMERICAN opinion... and I hope I NEVER RUN INTO ANYONE LIKE YOU IN ANY OF MY CLASSES.... Go ahead and check out the Yale graduates......The list is a lot more prestigious, than Oprah, a late nite joker and the latest international NUT who will not be President for much longer... the IDIOT Mahnoud.. Get a Life... and go to your local Community College...

^Ooh, someone had their feathers ruffled it seems. I would like to commend the blazing maturity of both above posts.[/sarcasm]

Yes. (10 char.)

lol why can't everyone just get along? i persoanally think that im sooo much better than harvard its not even funny so i simply matriculated to some no-name public school in nyc and pay nothing at all for an it and got to meet the original zagat surveyors!! in your face harvard.
