@erinlees Was it strenuous to do all that walking? I’ll most likely be in Kinsolving and I have quite a few friends who’ll be at San Jac/Jester. I also have a class near that area and a couple near the Main Tower area. Would you recommend I get a bike? I’m afraid walking several miles a day in Texas heat would be torture…but I don’t want to deal with lugging a bike around unless I really have to.

I personally dont think a bike is worth it, I would say 90% of the campus walks to class everywhere. Classes are close enough, if you live on campus they are very close, even off campus its only a 10-15 minute walk ot most classes. Bikes get stolen alot and seem, to me, to be more of a pain that the 5 minutes of time saved would be. But to each their own, I just personally dont think a bikes worth it.

It is not a torture to walk. It is a torture to sweat (especially if you are in a hurry and have to walk fast, you sweat and sweat and sweat…)
When I had to cross the campus several times in all directions during my daughter’s orientation I was very glad that I had a bag with all kind of promotional materials, including T-shirts. I had something to change. :)

But it is not a permanent problem. In October weather is usually very pleasant, and during winter it sometimes gets really cold.

Think about efficiency when making this decision. I save a lot more than 5 minutes from biking across campus rather than walking. I never feel as if the bike is a burden or that I’m lugging it around.

During passing periods, it’s a pain walking with the masses of pedestrians on the sidewalk, especially if you’re in a hurry. If 90% of students are walking, you’ll have the upper hand on the empty roads!
As far as safety goes, I feel a lot safer on my bike when it’s late. I have no qualms against biking home past midnight, but I’d feel wary about walking home to west campus this late.

All in all, if you’re off campus it’s smart to get a bike, especially if you want to be able to get home quickly. It’s a 15 minute round trip as opposed to 40 mins, so you can easily dash home if you need to.
