Bicycle at UT?

Any tips?
I live in Auburn, and here, people steal bicycles. They even steal seats and wheels if they're locked.

Is UT like Auburn?
Should I be worried with a bicycle?

If bicycle is a bad option, what other things do people use?
for example, a long board ?

I think bikes are a good option for getting around–almost everything you need is within biking distance from campus. Just make sure to invest is a really solid locking system for your bike–a thick U-lock AND a cable lock. Also you can engrave your bike with a serial number in case it is taken. There are bikes stolen here, but it’s because students don’t secure them properly, or they don’t get them engraved and registered with UTPD.

Anything that is not locked up at UT will get stolen.

Don’t waste your money of a cable lock. Get a good u lock and you should probably get a cable to go with it. I haven’t actually seen any stolen seats on campus, so I wouldn’t worry about it.

Okay. Thanks a bunch!

If you happen to live in or near the Honors Quad, it’s a great place to park your bike at night because they lock the courtyard after 10pm. But yeah, make sure you have a good lock. Bikes getting stolen is a commonality here. U-Lock and Cable; BOTH are a must. Also once you get here, just beware, because there’s some if not a lot of places where you’re bike will get impounded if you lock it where you can’t. I’ve seen other things for transportation, skateboards, longboards, rollerskates, roller blades, scooters, and even unicycles! haha.

I’ve noticed on the daily UT police reports that even very cheap bikes get stolen, so be careful!

I might just get a longboard or something haha

I honestly don’t know why so many people want to steal bikes…

Same here …

ya why do bikes get stolen so much? that’s so annoying. so if I brought a cute/expensive bike, even if I locked it up, I shouldn’t bring it? bummer.

Theft is high at all college campuses. However, UT also is in the middle of town, so “crimes of opportunity” are common. If you use good locks and never leave your laptop/backpack/wallet unattended, you’ll be fine.

thanks zlc!!

When you buy a U-lock, be sure to get one that takes a regular flat key. UTPD does a demonstration during orientation that shows how to open a round-type key lock with a bic pen cap -yikes!
