Son accepted to honors college and wondering if it is worth it for someone who will graduate with AA out of high school? I understand you get option of Landis Hall and premium registration dates but how does that affect someone coming in with 60 credit hours already? As you can see from my user name was denied freshman acceptance at UF but offered transfer opportunity to UF. Really think the campus and atmosphere at FSU is better than UF.
I have heard great things about the honors college. What’s the harm? He can also decide not to stick with it. That premium registration and other opportunities may really help!
My son was accepted both and accepted into honors at both…I’m a UF alumni, but our FSU tour and experience blew UF out of the water. It made me sad as an alumni.
Honors students always benefit - even with an AA he may enjoy the community (it’s much easier to get to know people) and want a couple interactive seminars;, priority registration is worth its weigh in gold (it means he’ll be able to choose his schedule, his hours but also his professors); he’ll benefit from more personalized advising, and generally speaking honors students just have more opportunities.
All in all, there aren’t downsides that I can think of, but if he doesn’t like it he can just drop it at the end of the first year.
The only downside to FSU honors that my son reports is the Honors Colloquium you have to take freshman year. Each of his honors friends think that is a huge waste of time and needs to be revamped. Otherwise, he loves the program, loves living in Landis, and has made all his close friends from the honors program.
Thanks everyone for your input. I guess I need to call and ask about priority registration. Signed up for orientation for June 12 and thought registration was done then. Fsu did have a very beautiful campus when we went on tour. Did our own tour of UF and campus was very spread out.
