Is I Just About the Grades? NYU question??/

I am a junior and freshman and sophomore year i did AWFUL. i was very medically sick with seizures and recently have gotten brain surgery and have been seizure free for 3 months! all grades r A and B this year… i have 250 community servicwe hours, I am in 5 clubs , BBYO, Buddies (where we play sports w special kids), juniorettes (community service), spoken word (i am a very very very big writer…) ,writing is one of my favrotie things to do, i am on the school spoken word team. i play tennis , and the classes i take ths year are chemistry 1, english 3, us histiry hon, creative writing hon, algebra 2, peer counseling, and teaching assistiant. i would be in honors and AP if i didnt go through missing so much school for my medical issues which made my life so hard. i take the ACT in febuary, iM just nervous, NYU has been my dream school since before 5th grade when my seizures began. I have a 3.2 unweighted gpa. it couldve been soooo much better if i wasnt sick for these years. I wanna go to NYU for journalism.i just dont know if there only gonna look at grades. and im really nervous. do you think my essay can help and all of the othe things?

This is a really tough break. I’m so sorry that you’ve had to go through this.

Your grades are probably low for NYU. That being said, you could try their liberal studies program. They take lower grades there and then move students into the regular program.

Also have a few back-up schools that you love just as much. NYU is a wonderful school, but there are some issues. One is that their financial aid isn’t terrific. You may find a less expensive school that offers much of what you’re looking for.

For journalism, you may want to look at schools with great writing programs, such as University of Iowa. There are many places with good writing programs.

Another method is to attend community college and raise your grades and then apply as a transfer student.

Best of luck

Hi there. I’m pretty positive that if a medical emergency affected your school performance, there’s a way to notify NYU of that. Albeit, it’s been two years since I’ve seen the application, but undergoing brain surgery seems to me a viable reason for having less than stellar grades your first two years.

All of that being said, it’s still not a guarantee, especially since your level of coursework is a tad bit lacking.

If your major is journalism, like what Dustyfeathers said, I would consider looking at other schools. NYU requires you to double major if you’re pursuing journalism. If journalism is your passion, don’t let the idea of NYU distract from that.

Regardless, I’m so happy to hear that you’re seizure free and I wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors.

curious if you are an NYU student and paying your own way, would you do it again? My son has been accepted early and we have until today! to make our decision and its been a roller coaster. The cost net price calculator was way off and what we thought we could do versus what the aid was that they actual gave him, that is truly a useless tool. It doesn’t seem fair to have anyone take on that ominious debt when he has been given other offers of nearly free rides to equally great schools, but not in his dream location of NYU. We are encouraging him to go to the school of “not his dreams,” bank his scholarship monies and start his life in NYU debt free if thats where he wants to ultimately be…I really worry that letting a dream die will be like a death in his real world in all the same ways. However, he could have quite a few real dream experiences for the $250,000 price tag minus the very small aid award of $24,000 over 4 years. That’s nothing in terms of aid! Its truly dissappointing

thank you so much for all of your advice. it means so much to me.

@momnyu What did you decide?

I would not do it. NYU is not “dream school” worthy, esp at that price.

FYI: They don’t meet full need, so regards of the NPC, you cannot predict the gap they will stick you with!
