Okay, so I am planning on transferring to NYU Tisch for fall 2017. However, I have a few problems.
By the time the semester ends, I will most likely have a gpa of 1.71 (5 class with 2 A’s and 3 F’s). Before you start freaking out, I have solid explanations for these (which I will be providing in my application). Basically, there was a large accident (my professors agree it is a serious and abnormal situation) involving one of my immediate family members (it’s a touchy subject, so I won’t go into detail except for in the actual application), and because of this accident I was/am unable to attend school since early-mid October; I could not attend because I had to stay home and watch my younger sister and grandparents (they don’t speak English). I was also officially diagnosed with anxiety disorder and ocd around late October/early November. Although my professors understood how unconventional my situation was, only two of them have been so graciously accommodating towards me; these are the only two classes where I am able to take to final in. In high school my gpa was below average because of anxiety (+depression in senior year).
I took a gap year after graduation because I did not want to attend university and was trying to shake off my depression. I came out of it really great and ready to get my education and take a step forward; I was a completely different person with a lot more confidence and optimism. However, with all of these things constantly popping up, my mental health is not in the best state; I will be taking the next semester off.
I only took the ACT once and received a 26 (English 31, Math 23, Reading 28, Science 23). Ironically, I have been told a copious amount of times that I am a great writer, but English is one of the classes that I will have failed come the end of the semester.
I have confidence that my writing and essays will be nice, and the supplemental material for Tisch will be great (I apologize if I sound cocky, but I feel very proud of the work that I have done for it). One of my professors will also be writing a recommendation for me, which I believe will be helpful.
The only thing that has me worried is my gpa; although I have a substantial reasoning for such a low grade, I am still quite scared of how it can impact my gpa. I have been told that NYU focuses on the essays and that Tisch will look at the application and supplemental material at the same time (I really hope that is true), but should I even apply with a gpa that low?
