i'm in high school now and taking IB Math HL, with a horrible inexperienced teacher that doesn't know about what he's talking about. I've been getting B's on tests and quizzes, even one C, and its really affecting my GPA.

I know IB Math SL would be extremely easy because I've looked at what they study, but it would really boost my GPA because its also weighted.

Do universities really see how IB Math HL is harder? and do they understand that a lower GPA may result?

Also, if I switch from IB Math HL to SL, it would show on my transcript. SO, do universities get a bad impression of me?

I don't think it matters if you're not going to major in something math related in college. I had the opportunity to take higher level math, i'm smart enough, but I'm going to standard level because this is my way of thinking "Why take higher level and have it kill my gpa with all the extra work." "It's not like I'm doing engineering anyway." I didn't think it would be worth it for me to see a drop in gpa and more work.
In college's eyes, I think they're credited about the same, they're both advanced. You have to ask yourself this- how many other challenging classes am I taking? Will I be able to handle this? Bottom line- if you're going into engineering or something math related, take higher level, if you're going into humanities , take standard level.

If you're willing to go from an A student in math to a C student in high level, than do it I guess. Not saying this will necessarily happen, but I've heard from others that it did.
