Is Indiana (Kelley) or Miami U (Farmer) a better business school

I was accepted as a direct admit to both Kelley and Farmer undergraduate business schools. I have visited both schools and like them equally. I know that Business Week ranks Kelley 19th and MiamiU 16th so they are very close. I'm tring to decide where to go next year, but can't make up my mind. Does anyone have any personal experiences good or bad with either one of them? Thanks...

adrryno…my son is considering the same two schools. I am sure that you will hear from a lot of people on CC who widely would elect Kelley. We have visited both places. Academically, I think you couldn’t go wrong with either choice. I think that IU is a much more liberal campus, and is obviously twice the size. That brings advantages and disadvantages. I love the arts aspect of IUs campus. There are so many amazing musical things happening there all the time with Jordan there. But Miami has much more of a private school feel and the undergrads are the focus of the school. My son is leaning toward the smaller environment at Miami, but since we are out of state, the money is a definite factor. I just really don’t think you can choose badly between those two schools. To make the IU environment smaller, you could look into an honors dorm or one of the living communities…I understand that there is now a “Kelley” community. The new Farmer business building is beautiful.

thanks…I don’t live in ohio or indiana so i have to pay out of state tuition for either one of them. I also got the same amount of scholarship money from both of them…

Which major do you want to go into specifically?

Also, be aware that msot people don’t really care about businessweek rankings; US News is the business school rankings that employers care about.

maxellis,

employers care about US news rankings for overall school. when it comes to undergrad bschools they look towards the business week. the US news rankings are solely based on deans and senior faculty. where business week they take deans, senior faculty, alumni, recruiters, and current students into consideration.

debrockman,

is dead on. if it was between IU and miami U, i personally would choose IU over Miami U

yes, I also think debrockman gives a good overview of the things to consider for both schools.

You can’t go wrong choosing either one–so adrryno28, pick the one where you feel the most comfortable and think you’ll be happiest (and also consider which one is closer to where you think you’ll end up living after graduation).

have you seen any of the talk about the businessweek rankings?

Nobody takes businessweek rankings seriously; even people from Notre Dame admit their business school is far from the best b-school in the nation

Miami (Ohio) has been steadily climbing in the rankings for the last few years. I think that has a greater impact on the visitors to CC than to hiring companies, (if any actually still exist).

As a former hiring manager, I can say that in the Midwest, IU - Kelley has had a strong reputation for a longer period of time. That doesn’t mean Miami (OH) is worse it just means that managers of my generation, 25+ years out of college, tend to think of a school’s reputation as what it was when we were in college. IU has been good for a while, Miami (OH) is only now getting more widely known.

My son had a “feeling” after his visits. No “feeling”?

I think part of the “feeling” was from the really exceptional tour guide at Miami who really focused on the traditions as we walked around the campus. He also hit a real hotbutton when he talked a lot about the hockey games and how virtually all the student body goes to the games and how passionate they are. Being a huge UK basketball fan, I think my son is having a hard time wanting to root for anybody but the “CATS” on the basketball court…although he is a bit of a rebel and would enjoy being a CATS supporter among die-hard Hoosiers
Both schools are great.

I’m majoring in marketing and entrepreneurship…I liked both schools equally…I liked different stuff about each school…they were very different in my perspective, but both had great qualities

go to Kelley. they have an excellent program for entrepreneurship and a top 10 program for marketing. from 10 years from now on I see the Kelley School making more improvements than Miami(Ohio). Kelley is expanding their building, being more selective with admissions, placing an emphasis on Diversity, etc… I am sure Miami (Ohio) is working fixing their weaknesses as well. My advice is biased. Go to the Miami (Ohio) thread and ask about it as well.

To the OP–I have no vested interest in either, and really don’t know beans but am trying to learn since DS#2 (current hs junior) will look at both this summer.

I just wanted to share DS#1’s experience at about this point of his senior year of hs. He had narrowed it down to his top two schools and re-visited both in the same weekend (including overnights with students). The good news was he came away with a clear preference. If you can work it into your schedule, taking another look at IU and Miami might help you decide.

(And FWIW, I agree with the posters who say you probably can’t go wrong with either business school, so perhaps focus on the other aspects of the schools in making your decision.)

Figure out where you want to work and what companies recruit from that school. I think that’s something that’s overlooked at times. Also, see if you can talk to students who go there already(talk to random students you see in the business school).

Also, consider the other majors as well when you’re making your decision. I didn’t know what I was doing and I ended up doing finance & marketing and I’m still wondering if that’s a good decision.

From what I’ve seen in finance and marketing: overall solid classes…makeup of classes is interesting…finance, everyone seems more focused, intense…marketing is more laid back.

Going back to recruiting, I’ll only talk about Kelley as I know nothing about Farmer. If you’re doing finance or accounting, there’s plenty of opportunities. With marketing, from what I’ve seen and been through, most marketing major opportunities are in retail or sales. (Think Target, Kohls, Altria, Northwestern, etc.). There are a few of the bigger consumer goods/market research companies that recruit: P&G, Nielsen, and Unilever, but they only recruit a few students each year.

On class size: don’t let the admissions people fool you…in my finance/accounting classes: 40-50. In marketing…30-40. I don’t think it’s a bad thing classes are that big or maybe I’ve just gotten used to it. I’ve been able to ask professors questions after class and go to office hours with no trouble. Also, bigger class sizes are great opportunities to meet new people.

The business school sometimes seems crowded…it’s sometimes hilarious seeing a long line of people waiting for a computer in one of the labs in the business school. However, as other posters have said earlier, there are numerous organizations, academic programs, and other campus things that will make IU have a “homey” feel.
