is that true? is alcohol very prevelant among students?

To be honest, Yes.

Drinking is the favorite past-time by far. However, if you don't like to drink you can go to Late Night Penn State, where you can find non-alcoholic activities (stuff like indoor sports, board games, karaoke, movies, or just hanging out).

Good luck finding people to go with you though.

From what I hear from past students, the "Lite Night Penn State" is pretty much a joke, meaning that your better off staying in your dorm. Alcohol is very prevalent among students at PSU... they are ranked the #2 or something party school.

2 Party School in the nation....

yeah, it is a very heavy drinking school. The frats, apartment parties, and bars make up most of the night life. There are a lot of club sports, and other clubs as well, that you can get involved in, but that can take up only so much time. It is a very fun and social place, but if you are completely against drinking it may not be the best fit. Basically, the number #2 ranking is well deserved.

what everyone has been saying is very true. PSU is a drinking school. However there are a good number of people who go to latenight (some nights better than others) and also theres going to the gym (basketball and other sports) at latenight which could be fun if you like playing sports. If you cant deal with heavy drinkers though, its not exactly a perfect school ;).

From what I've seen, not many people go to Late night. And those that do, are minorities and Asian grad students. But if you can get a group of people to go with you occasionally, it can be fun.

Ive seen plenty of people at the games and not to mention some of the movies. Also the pool isnt bad if your not too cheap to fork out the dough ;). You really just have to look around if you want to find something to do...

OP - You can always hang out with me. =]

Yep, lets just say that the weekends up here are quite fun.

Canyon Pizza...enough said.

OMG I love canyon pizza!! It's amazing.

Its only amazing late at night though, if you get what Im saying. Ive only been there once for lunch, and I thought it sucked.

I've only ever had Canyon Pizza sober and thought it was great.

thanks y'all...sorry but I guess I'm not applying to Penn State..??
haha believe or not I'm alergic to alcohol so.....
yeah guess my only option is to apply either Bringham Young or Military school?
jk....

wow...allergic to alcohol. is that even possible? is anyone allergic to alcohol?

hey starling- my son's chosen room mate next year is a non-drinker and he does just fine. Participated in the late night basketball events last year and goes to parties. Yes, we all hear about the drinking...but there's lots of other things to do too (outdoor activities, movies, performing arts events). State College is like a small city. But if you hate seeing drunk kids roaming around and screaming at football games, it might not be the place for you. They tend to be visible and loud... and not just at PSU.

Yeah, although you can perfectly choose not to drink and seek places that suit you, heavy drinking is widespread at psu and you can't help but be affect by it in some way (i.e. wasted kids roaming on the street late at night, occasional rackets in your hall/vomit in the bathroom/party plans among friends, etc)

I would say avoid state schools located in small towns altogether as these have the biggest party culture.

I attended Lehigh in the late 70s when the dean of students would drink with us at the fraternity. (THings have changed alot, for the better.)

Trust me, students can typically drink as little, or much, as they seek to. The fact that PSU is a "party school" simply speaks to the availability, nothing more than that. I encourage all new students at PSU, or anywhere else, to look within themselves and try mightily to resist the temptation to drink in relation to what "everyone else" is doing. There's a huge difference between having a few drinks and binging to excess.

One of my regrets fpr college was drinking as much as I did. It was unnecessary, and just plain immature.

Be smart, and true to yourselves.

hvccgolf is right. I went to a tiny Christian college (for a year) and was shocked to learn that most of the kids drank (and then, did other things too) all the time. It was like they went to college just to get drunk. At the State U, there were plenty of drunk kids, but thankfully, there were plenty of non-drunk kids too and I was very happy meeting many of those students.

You have to know your own limits and stay yourself. If you are not into the drinking scene, you don't have to be just because you are at Happy Valley.
