Hi there,
I was wondering how would the office of admissions feel about receiving the personal statements via e-mail. I just need a couple of days to review my essays, but if I wait till then with the whole application package, I will miss the deadline (sending mails overseas takes about two weeks, or may be more).

Why don't you just apply online?

If they don't call this out as an option, then I would not pursue it. My guess is that if the entire package is not together, that the chances of them getting your email'd essays with the rest of your package is slim. I say, finish reviewing your essays and get the complete package sent straightaway

"Why don't you just apply online?"

Well, I still have to send the teachers recommendations, the school report, the supplement and other forms that cannot be submitted online, so as Avoidingwork said, the package won't be together. I know that the people at the admissions office receive loads of e-mails on the admissions@college.edu and I am concerned about the essay being skipped/ignored/deleted...
Does anyone have sent additional requested materials over the e-mail?
pls hlp!

Unless it says you can send them via email, I wouldn't.

"I still have to send the teachers recommendations, the school report, the supplement and other forms that cannot be submitted online"

You are not responsible for sending those items. Your school is responsible for sending those items and the colleges will be looking for them to come from the school. With the exception of the supplemental forms which are part of your application that have to be provided by you the applicant (optional essays, required second essays, writing samples etc)The need for teacher recommendations, school reports It has nothing to do with you sending parts one and two of the college application including your personal statement essays.

If you wait on those things (teacher recs, grapde reports) and as a result your application is late, the school will not accept the excuse that your were waiting to send these things and your application may not be considered for admissions.

Unless the school wwhich you are applying to has a self managed application process where everything must be mailed in the same envelope (more common for graduate programs not undergrad) then send your application on line with the essays in the application as soon as possible so that you do not miss yor deadline.

It will reflect very badly on you tosend your stuff in a separate e-mail to the admissions office as it will show that you either cannot follow instructions or have no regard for the instructions which have been given to you. If you have an e-mail address and the school needs something from you via e-mail they will let you know. Otherwise do not take it upon your self to e-mail them.

Check to see if the school has an online application option. Most do now. If so, you fill out most of the self reported stuff including your essays online. The rec's and transcripts are separately mailed.

Unless you do an online application, you should not mail part of you ap and email essays. Either do the whole thing online ap, or do the whole thing manually and mail. Either way, the school reports are separately mailed.

Thank you all for replying.
As I said earlier, I am sending the application package overseas (from Eastern Europe) and the cost for an air mail package is just too high for a school to cover. That is why I have to send the school reports and recommendations on my own - in sealed envelopes together with the all other documents.
I have all of these documents ready to be sent, but I don't have some application supplement essays. Well, if it is not recommended to e-mail application papers, is there an option to send only the personal statements later (let's say a week later) and what will happen if they arrive about 3-4 days after the deadline?
thanks again.

Again, check to see if the school accepts online applications. If they do, then you should fill out you application online, and also submit your essays that way. This will buy you some time. Your school package will contain your transcripts and recco's, and that will be in the one package of documents. They will also get another item by mail and that will be your SAT scores from the college board. The school is prepared to recieve different pieces, but you should try to get everything in by the deadline.

I think if you send your essays later after the deadline this will be no good. I don't know how to make you understand that you can submit your application online. Get onto the schools website and read about ONLINE APPLICATION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It will solve your problem.

ok, ok, calm down :) I will consider the online application as an option. However, I'll wait for the holidays to be over and will contact the colleges to ask them if there will be any problem.
Thank you all for the help, especially bettina :)
If anyone has something to add, please do it, I'll appreciate it!

P.S. I was sceptical about the online application because I've heard that this way one can't apply for a fee-waiver and that a digital signature is required to sign the application. Obviously I was wrong.

No, my dd did an online app with a fee waiver. Most schools prefer online app now.
