I have applied to a program and I'm waiting a decision from the Dept. REALLY frustrating to wait. I also need to plan a couple of other family vacations so if I'm accepted then planning will be different....lot of things waiting for me based on this decision....
Can I mail the advisor to ask him/her if the decision is done yet? Or is there any other way to go about this? Please let me know.

It’s generally not accepted practice to ask so you can plan family vacations, but it is a little unusual that it’s so close to April 15 and you haven’t heard, even if it isn’t a Council of Graduate Schools member. When was your deadline? If it was just last month, wait it out a little longer. If it was in early February or before, I think you can ask.

Don’t email your potential advisor, though; email the department secretary and politely ask when you can expect news on admissions decisions.

juillet,
THANKS for your views here. The deadline was March 15 and the Dept started reviewing applications last week
Will email the secretary, thanks for letting me know.

By the way, what is the council of graduate school members? I never bothered checking all that…my school is accredited by middle states body…
am i missing something if the school is not a council member?

It’s still too soon. Give them another a month. When julliet said “deadline” that’s the “deadline” to respond BACK to the program for PhD admissions who have extended offers of acceptance.

Just tell your family that things will just have to wait longer, or just take your chance and book 'em.

Family vacations will be scarce during graduate school. You can always look at the academic calendar of that university to see when breaks are, although it’s entirely possible that you will be expected to work right through them. The best best to take off is around the December/January holidays.

As for finding out when you should expect your decision, you can call or email the program office. Be prepared, however, for the possibility that the office has no information. The professors make the decisions, and they might not communicate their timeline to the administrative assistants.

I called two graduate advisors from different schools about the status of my application when I was waiting.

Both were very receptive and said that they get calls ALL the time regarding application status.

Just be polite and professional… there’s no reason you cannot call.
