My D took the SATs for the 3rd time on Aug 24th, where the results won’t be available until Sept 6th. I just got an email from College Board saying that you can send your SAT scores to 4 schools for free if you sign up by Sept 2nd - before you know the results!
- Is this ever a good idea?
- I was thinking of waiting until after Sept. 6th, and then just sending the highest scores.
- I heard (hearsay) that schools might average your scores together if you send more than one, so it’s best to send only the highest one (but I don’t know if this is true)
- I heard the UCs ask for all your scores, but it is ok to ignore this and just send the highest ones
I have never heard of a school averaging scores. All I’ve heard/read state they will use the highest. If a school asks for all scores and you don’t provide them your child runs the risk of being rescinded. Not worth it.
Thanks! It’s always tough to distinguis “what I heard” from “what is true”.
You could use the four free scores for schools that require all scores be sent or for schools that state on their admissions website that they will superscore. For all others I would wait until you see the score. That’s JMO, though.
Cal States superscore the SAT and ACT (take highest scores from each section) so there is really no downside in sending all scores. UC’s will take the highest total score from a single sitting and encourage applicants to send all scores. She will not be penalized for having low scores especially if she shows improvement but since the UC’s are so competitive, it is up to your discretion which scores to send.
My son’s always wanted to the see the scores before sending so they waited until the final scores were reported. All SAT scores will be sent unless you use score choice but you can pick and choose which ACT scores to send.
Your DD can get 4 freebies if she researches her schools and there are 4 that require all SAT1 scores or super score. For the others she can use score choice.
