Is it better to take an AP exam and do poorly or not take it at all?

I registered for the APUSH exam, but I haven't studied at all and I don't think my honors us history course has prepared me adequately. Would it be worth taking even though I'd probably get a low score?

Also, how hard is the exam? Do you need to memorize a lot of little insignificant details?

this is one of the hardest exams …b/c of all the details…
you can always delete your score…if you want to waste the money…

APUSH exam is hard. Just take the test and see what you get, who knows you might be lucky with a 3. Even if you fail, you have to report that score.

^but it’s optional…you dont have to report the score if you dont want to .

I thought APUSH was easy, maybe just because I can remember random factoids pretty well. Anyway, you’ll have a tough time if you have no idea what to do on the DBQ’s. Study how to do those. You may not get a good score but there’s no point not taking it now. Who knows, you might pull a 2 or even a 3.

I would suggest first going onto sparknotes and taking some sample US history SAT II’s.

I would actually wager that the SAT II’s are harder (as in more specific) than any APUS exam, HOWEVER, you need to know MORE on the APUS exam (SAT II’s tend to focus on two time periods and then hammer the tester on those).

All in all, if you do well on 1 or 2 SAT II’s on sparknotes, I wouldn’t be nervous at all.

They’re automated, timed, and even scored for you. =]

You don’t HAVE to send your scores to colleges during the admissions process. If you’re parents are paying or you have a waiver, just take it. I didn’t want to take the AP Euro exam last year because I KNEW I would do poorly. In fact, most of the people from my class did - only two threes and a four out of a class of 25. I scored a four. I was in complete shock. Heck, I even got crappy scores on some of my practice tests. If the money doesn’t matter, try it - you might get lucky.

Some colleges will ask you on the application what AP courses you took and what scores you got on the exam.

You are not required to send any AP scores to colleges. Therefore, I would recommend that you at least take the test and see how you do. If you don’t like the score, then you don’t have to report it.

If you have a fee waiver, it’s common courtesy to take the test. Somebody’s paying for it - don’t waste their money.
