Is it better to use the Common App or use the college's application?

And, if I do use the college's application, and I'm not sure if I am going to apply, should I
just go ahead and make an account on the website?

Do you mean a paper app on the college website? Common app, common app, common app! It is MUCH easier for the college to process the electronic version of the application. You occasionally run into parents who somehow think the paper app carries more weight. It only carries an annoyance factor for admissions these days… They are understanding if for some reason you truly can’t fill out the electronic app. But if you can, do the common app.

Well some schools have a paper version of their application, or you can create an account and do the online version

Do not do the paper version if there is any electronic version available. If you are applying to any Common App schools, then why not use the Common App for as many schools as possible? You only have to enter most of the data once. And if your high school is uploading recommendations, that is one process for them vs. multiple processes.
