Is it dangerous for admissions to curse on social media and YouTube?

Will it affect my chances of admission negatively if I curse in the captions of social media posts (definitely NOT using hurtful and / or derogatory terms, but like the standard four-letter words or ■■■■■) or post videos on Youtube that includes swearing? I obviously won’t include social media in my applications, but they’re public and searchable. I may or may not include my YouTube channel in my application because it shows some original works that showcase creativity and effort.

Please offer thoughts! Thank you!

Is it worth the risk? At one of my son’s Ivy interviews the alum in quick succession asked about several social media posts he had ranging from sports to a social justice blog to a charitable fund raiser he ran. She had clearly looked very closely at his social media presence.

Can’t answer your question with a degree of certainty but I suspect his interview would have tanked if it had been profane. Keeping in mind people’s definition of inappropriate can span a wide range, I would suggest discretion is the best track.

@Nocreativity1 Thank you, but were they contents from your son’s facebook, instagram, etc? Because that would be somewhat surprising to me. Or were they websites from a google search? I know those two may not be all that different but what I meant in my original post was facebook, instagram, etc.

To be honest I don’t know precisely. I just googled his name and school and there was you tube and news stories about each of the aforementioned subjects, so I suspect that to be the simple source.

I will give you the same advice I was given 30 years ago on my first day of work. If you don’t want your grandmother to read about it on the cover of a newspaper don’t do it if possible. If your smart enough to ask the question here you are smart enough to find words to express yourself that won’t offend anyone.

Just my best advice, or don’t get caught:)

My kids all googled themselves and made sure anything that came up associated with their names told the story they wanted to tell. If it’s public, be careful, just in case.
