Is it difficult to get into The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music? (NYC)

Hi, I'm a female trombonist looking to get into a good jazz program. The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music is first on my list for several reasons. I have been playing for roughly 7 years. My question is, how well does the school expect you to play for your audition? I know this may be hard to explain, but any input from anyone who currently attends the school or has recently graduated would be very helpful. Thank you. :)

The question really should be. “How well do YOU think you stack up against other jazz trombonists your age”? Your teacher should know where you are technically and be able to advise you also.
The school’s web site lists the requirements for Brass as:

Audition Repertoire Requirements

Three jazz standards performed with a rhythm section provided by the school:

 1. One up-tempo tune
 2. One ballad
 3. One blues tune

Have you had experience playing in jazz ensembles and do you have the repertoire needed to meet the requirements? Admission also depends upon the number of openings that year and the number and quality of the other students auditioning. Hang in there- it’s a holiday weekend so a lot of people are away from the CC site, but I’m sure that others will chime in here and offer you some great advice!
