Hi... I just joined today...My son has an audition coming up at The New School for Jazz. Can anyone give us some advice? What to expect?? Thanks in advance.

jazzdrummermom, welcome. I don’t recall any specific experience for this cycle, but posts by SJTH and Steve M might be worth searching. Both had sons auditioning last year, Steve M’s son largely (if not exclusively) at west coast schools. SJTH’s son was accepted at The New School, but is at Oberlin.

I’m sure either or both will chime in.

Jazzdrummermom, yes, my son auditioned on drums last year at the New School. He found the audition to be EXACTLY as stated on the New School website. There was a rhythm section comprising faculty and students. The auditions are run very precisely, on time. Your son will wait in the lobby area with a few other students. He should bring his drum pad to warm up on, as I don’t believe my son was given a practice room. He found the New School staff to be professional, collaborative and friendly. Be sure to bring copies of music to the audition, in case songs are unfamiliar to the section.

Best of luck to your son–and to you–it’s hard on parents!

Thank you! Do they ask any questions or are you required to do ANYTHING else besides play the three prepared pieces?

According to my son, they look over your resume/application (which they had in hand) and chatted about a couple of things, but nothing like a formal Q&A.

Hello Jazzdrummermom,
Good luck with your son’s audition at The New School. Unfortunately, we only know of one jazz student at The New School (a guitarist) who’s from our area. My son auditioned at a number of schools (mostly on the West Coast) last winter. He had a 50/50 split between live and DVD auditions. Every audition was different - and a couple were actually quite strange events. After considering all the various schools, options, faculty and scholarships, he selected the Jazz Studies program at the University of North Texas. He’s very happy with the choice. I’m sure your son will find a good fit among his choices.
Best Regards

Thanks!! Does anyone know the acceptance rate for The New School?

Jazzdrummermom, my son is also auditioning at the New School on drumset on February 28th…when is your son’s audition?

It’s on March 1st…Good luck! Where else is he auditioning??

I too would love to know the acceptance rate for New School for Jazz. All the numbers I’ve seen have been for all the New School programs (including, I think, Eugene Lang).

Good luck to your S as well, jazzdrummermom! I wish I knew the acceptance rate at the NS, but as has been noted so many times, it just seems like such a crap shoot at all of these schools! I will let you know how the New School audition goes when we return next week.
S is auditioning at SUNY Purchase, UMass Amherst and U of the Arts, all late Feb and into March. He just auditioned at NEC this past Monday, Berklee several weeks ago, and Long Island U -Brooklyn…I’d love to hear where your S is heading in the next months too!

Thanks…My S also auditioned at Berklee several weeks ago. He will be auditioning also at NYU in Feb. He only applied to 4 schools…Manhattan School of Music was a no. Decisions are all April 1st. March will be a very long month!

Anybody receive ANY emails from New School Jazz?

Jazzdrummermom, no news on our end yet as well…we are just hanging tight!
My son says that they told him in his audition that notifications would go out the last week of March, so that may mean this week or next.
I think someone, somewhere on this site was passing around chocolate and red wine…

Thanks…Congrats on the acceptances so far! …my son is getting anxious… this is his first choice. Has your son decided where he is going yet?

For the record, my son has not yet heard from New School either.

Thanks for letting us know. Hopefully we will hear soon!

New School was the first school we heard from last year–right about now–so hopefully you’ll hear any day!

Just curious if anyone has called NS to find out how/when they are notifying?

Yes, I called yesterday…just couldn’t stand one more day of looking through bills and junk mail!!! I asked when notifications were going out and the very nice young woman answered brightly “April 1st”. Of course I forgot to ask what format, mail or email. More waiting…
