Is it easy for you?

Ok.
I was talking to my parents about the SATs yesterday and my mom said, "I bet the reading and writing section of the SAT are super easy for the white kids (non-asian)." (A BIG unsourced, generizing, sort-of-racist assumtion)

I thought about this, and I wondered if it was true. I, an asian, think the math section on the SATs are a joke. Even the Math 2c and 1c. I got 1 wrong on my SAT1 (a mistake) and a 800 on my Math 2c. (I didnt use a calculator for both tests.) Being so, is the reading and writing section easy for you white guys?

Even if I studyed 5 years for the SAT, I would never get a 800 on the CR and W section I don't think. And, I don't really like math that much.

I know the asian and white thing is a generlization, and know that some asians arent good at math and that some white people are good in math, but just some thoughts. Do white people think the CR and W sections are easy? I'm sort of curious.

Thanks.

Anecdotally, most Asians I know speak English just as well as I do (a white person.)

I'm failing to see why it would be easier for the white kid if the asian kid had grown up here (or some other English speaking country) as well...

I'm not going to sit here and bash the SAT's, but I'll throw in my 2 cents.

I have always been an above average writer (not bragging, just stating) and I read a lot (yes, for fun). I consistently get only a 9 on my essay on the writing section and a 600-620 on the verbal.

Back on topic, I have asian friends who do better than me on verbal and writing and asian friends who do worse. You're going to find only top percentile students on this website and honestly, I feel like a complete moron here with an SAT score below 2000.

Bottom line: Like anything in life, you're going to find students of all races with all kinds of scores. I don;t think the SAT is any easier for a "white" person than an "asian" person if everyone is speaking english.

I'm Asian and I got an 800 on both sections, but only after SIGNIFICANT work on my math skills. Math does not come naturally to me. I only did well on that section because my parents made me do math drills since I was 4 years old. Not surprisingly, I didn't do as well on the Math 2C test.

But if you look at those scores, Asians typically have lower verbal scores and higher math scores. I don't think that has to do with inherent ability though, the math scores are skewed because of children of immigrants who have a strong background in math/science from countries like China, India, Korea, and Japan--and the verbal scores are skewed because a percentage of Asians taking the tests weren't born in America. But I personally immigrated here and got an 800 as a 13 year old on CR :) And not close to that on Math...

I think it has nothing to do with race. Yah, if you recently began speaking English, it would be very difficult. However, I know many asians who are bad at math and many many white kids who can't read and think that CR and W are incredibly difficult. It depends on the individual. If you want to get better at CR and W, than you should read books. Read novels and magazines and the newspaper.
