Hi..
Is it easy to switch majors at JHU?
I'm interested in both Environmental engineering AND Global Environment Change & Sustainability.
The latter major is in the School of Arts & Sciences, while the former is in the school of engineering. If I decide to switch majors in my sophomore year, will it make a big difference – and will it be possible to do so (between schools)?

It’s as easy as filing a form. You are accepted into both schools at the same time so, with the sole exception of BME which requires a separate admission into the major, its as easy as it can be.

At what time of school year do students usually switch majors? I’m worried that if I studied my first year in school of arts & sciences, and wanted to switch to the engineering school, then I would miss out a whole year of all the core physics/other science courses. I heard for some colleges it’s okay to switch from engineering to arts&sciences, but not easy to switch the other way around. (BME is not my choice)

Its certainly possible to switch from Arts and Sciences to Engineering, though as you said, it can be a little trickier. That said, if you plan your schedule well for the first year, you can ease that process. I don’t know much about the GCES major, but from looking at their website, if you choose the Science concentration (as opposed to the Social Science concentration), you’re required to take Chemistry I/II, calculus I/II and Physics I/II, which would be typical of any engineering. While other GCES majors may not take all of these during their first year, many engineers do, and it may be wise to try to get all those done your freshman year. That way, you’ll be on solid footing for either major at the end of your freshman year.

I would recommend discussing the fact that you’re considering both majors to your academic advisor to get their input and maybe even meeting with one of the academic advisor in the Engineering school once you get to campus to get their take on things.
