I just got accepted as a freshman in Biological Sciences...but I might change it in the future. Is it really complicated?

The process itself is actually pretty easy. All you do is fill out a change of major petition at the schools counseling office. I actually filled one out myself just today.

It also depends on which major you want to change into. There’s only a few that are really selective, but the change of major process isn’t that difficult at all, you just need the pre-reqs for the major.
quick question: is it absolutely necessary to declare a major end of sophomore year? i decided to switch my major at the end of my freshmen year so i didn’t have the requirements done for my proposed school. however, i’m retaking one of the requirements and won’t be done with all requirements until summer session or possible my fall junior year. is that going to be a problem? :(

or can i just change majors as in change schools because i’m currently still unaffiliated…or do i need to actually declare a major? thanks for any help.

@phamous,

it is not absolutely necessary to declare a major. You can remain undeclared, just as I am about to this upcoming soph year. Did you attend the unit assignment for U/U students?

^ hey, thanks for the response. i just thought we had to declare by the end of our second year (not sure if you read my post wrong or something, i am current a soph). when i was a freshmen, i went to unit assignment and assigned myself to the school of bio sci. however, i decided the end of my freshmen year that i wanted to switch to social science. though for the specific major under socsci, i can’t declare yet because i won’t be done with the requirements by the end of this spring quarter (i just need 1 more course), but i would like to switch my affiliation to social sciences. not sure if its possible to switch schools without declaring a major? hope that made sense!

It’s possible to switch w/o declaring a major, it’d be that school - undecided. I was Undecided Social sciences for a while, and my bf switched into that… about declaring a major though I would ask a counselor or peer adviser to check that out. my bf asked about that and he didn’t meet the requirements to declare yet, but they said it was okay as long as it seemed like he was in progress to declaring the major.

^ ah, that’s great to hear. thanks!

ugh, got a call from the soc sci office today asking for my intended major. i told them about my situation about how i wanted to be housed in soc sci, but undeclared and how i only need 1 more class before i can declare and the guy said he’s going to throw away my application because i dont have all my requirements met yet.

moey, what counselor did your boyfriend talk to? i think the guy i spoke to was just the dude at the front desk.

anyways, after this quarter i’m going to have 2 chicano studies classes so i’m going to declare chicano studies major and then next year i’ll finish up my math requirements for the other major and then switch. hope that works anyways. really don’t want to get kicked out because of 1 stupid class :(

ah, i meant it was okay in that he could stay undeclared - (under a school) and that he wouldn’t get kicked out or anything.
they’re pretty strict on changing specific majors though, and you’ll need to meet the pre-reqs - the grade on your transcript before you can actually declare. (i tried even when i was in-progress taking my last pre-req)

ohhh okay, thanks :)
