I am a junior, and I am currently in french 4. My school does offer Ap French Language, but the teacher at my school is incompetent and irritating. I am concerned that if I take the class at my school, it will not prepare me sufficiently for the exam, and will instead waste much of my time. I am curious if it would be a possibility for me to learn the rest of what is needed to prepare for the Ap test without the class.
Yes, it is possible to self-study for AP French, but one of my main concerns is the listening part. You have to put in te time to listen to more French through your study guide book’s CD’s to prepare for the test. You can manage to get a high score on that test if you self-study the multiple-choice section. It would be like the French SAT Subject test. However, because this is AP, you have to record your own audio file and write an e-mail, which is quite difficult if you’re not good in listening or speaking French. It’s important to have those skills other than just having the ability to read and answer French. If you don’t believe in your French teacher, get some practice books sponsored by Barron’s or Princeton and spend a good deal of time immersing into the language through listening, so get your radio ready. I believe that will decide how you score on the AP test in May.
