Hi!
I just received an email from CPP that said the following “Congratulations on being recommended for admission* to the College of Engineering at Cal Poly Pomona. Your academic achievement places you among a select group of students invited to attend our annual Engineering Scholars Day.” Is it a good sign for my admission? CPP is one of my top choice and I’m not sure how to feel about this email, I don’t want to take anything for granted. Thanks!
If it is something like “you have privileges of no essay, 2 week decision making, waived application fee,” then it is a common strategy colleges use to lower their acceptance rate by making more people apply (and reject more).
Based on my past experience, yes it is a good sign but not definite admit. I would attend the event to show your interest.
@Gumbymom what confuses me a bit is that the date is not until March 4th, so it’s not something that will happen really soon, I still don’t understand if it’s something I should be excited for.
It is the same as the Showcase of Excellence event that several CPP applicants have received although that is this month. My son’s (data point of 2) received the invitation for the Showcase of Excellence and were admitted a few weeks later. Neither applied to the College of Engineering but I have seen past posts indicating that some of the applicants that were invited were eventually admitted.
CPP has already starting sending out decisions but I have seen Freshman decisions being sent out well into April so it is possible you may not have a decision until after the event. If you do not, I would attend the event as I stated above to show your interest.
I worry by not going to Showcase Day will reduce one’s chance of admission. But my son doesn’t want to write any more essay so not intend to apply to a Honors School. well CPP is not his top choice.
Neither of my son’s went to the Showcase, had sport events that weekend and were still accepted.
Being invited may mean something but I would think attending means nothing. Why would you need to demonstrate interest at CPP? Isn’t CPP like CPO in that no human deals with the application? Acceptances are machine generated, no one is reviewing them - been told that more than once at CPO. Is CPP different in that regard?
My daughter received the engineering invite yesterday too, and has not received an acceptance or rejection yet. I think it’s a favorable sign and recommend attending. You may learn a lot more about the program and a feel for the department by attending. You’ll also likely meet the dean which is cool too.
@Gumbymom I understand, well hopefully it will be a good sign! Thank you for the insight.
@scotlandcalling I have no idea at all… I’ve never heard that before but I think it will be useful for me.
@jewishmother That’s great! Is she planning on going? So far I’ve heard only good things about CPP and it truly is one of my top schools!
@WeTurnRed Yes, she is planning on going. CPP is where she sees herself studying engineering. She still has her UC apps out there, but she really liked the vibe of CPP.
Good luck to you! This is an exciting time for you, I’m sure. Let me know what happens!
@jewishmother I will! The best of luck to your daughter
