I was accepted into the textbook deferement program and was wondering if it was better to advance order textbooks online, or wait until I arrive into the UF campus and buy it from the bookstore.

If it is recommended to advance order, how do I know Apply the deferement online?

I would wait, and try to get your books from somewhere besides the school bookstore if you can.

A lot of times the textbook the professor puts on the syllabus doesn’t actually get used that much, if at all. It varies by class, of course, but I would wait before spending hundreds of dollars on books that you may not need.

Other options for textbooks:

Rent them from Chegg or a similar company. Usually costs less than $50, you keep the book for the semester and ship it back when you are done.

Campus Libraries often have copies of textbooks on course reserve. You can check the book out for a few hours, do what you need to do, and return it for the next student to use. You don’t have the convenient of having your own copy, but free is good.

Private bookstores. Gainesville has several stores that sell textbooks near campus. You might find your book at one of them for less than the UF bookstore is selling it. Some of them also do deferment programs where they won’t charge you for your books until after financial aid refunds have been processed.

Amazon. Very often cheaper, and with a new Amazon student account you can get free Amazon Prime benefits for 6 months.

If you do end up buying from the campus bookstore, buy used if at all possible. If you do end up with new books, DON’T REMOVE THE SHRINKWRAP until you are certain you are going to stick with the class. If you do you cannot return the book for a full refund.

DON’T BUY YOUR TEXTBOOKS FROM THE UF BOOKSTORE!!! They charge the highest price possible, and barely ever have the cheaper used books.

I recommend just waiting until classes start before you buy most of your books. Some classes have a book listed that you don’t necessarily need, or you may drop a class during drop/add week. before classes start, you should only buy books you absolutely know you will need.

Then, buy the books used from online or florida bookstore, or rent them.
The only time you should check out the uf bookstore is when a class has some kind of online access or software package, and even then you should first check to make sure the package isn’t cheaper elsewhere.

On a related note: Does anyone know if software (specifically Microsoft Office) can be purchased on financial aid deferment?

The school I’m transferring from would put anything in the bookstore on there, but UF sells so much random stuff in theirs I’m sure they apply limits somewhere.

What if Im paying everything through finanical aid nd they covered everything? Would I have to use the bookstore then?

Some bookstores in Gainesville will defer payment until after you receive your refund. Price it out, and if it is cheaper that way then definitely do it.

Or, if you can get away with it, use the reserve copy in the library until you get your money (about a month after classes begin) and then go rent or buy the book where ever you want. It seems complicated, but when you are on a shoestring budget, like most college students are, saving $50 or more on a book is really helpful.

You may be forced to use the UF bookstore sometimes, but I would do everything possible to avoid it.

You can always buy the book at the bookstore if you don’t have the money and as long as the wrapping is still intact then you can return for a full refund.
