Is it hard to get into college with Ds on your transcript??

Although I have a 3.1 GPA, I unfortunately have received 3 Ds on my transcript due to my abysmal performance during my first 1.5 years of high school. I've improved a lot as I haven't received lower than a B since my second semester of sophomore year and only received 3 Bs this whole year. Anyway will my upward trend (2.46, 3.0, 3.79) make up for my Ds for certain colleges (Preferably Top 50)???

If you are counting semester grades for full year classes you may not have 3 Ds. The transcript that colleges receive often show only the final course grade (and sometimes the final exam grade and Regents exam grade in NYS). Your upward trend will be noted favorably by admissions offices, although it won’t “make up” less than stellar grades earned earlier in your academic career at all colleges. Then again, there are some schools that disregard or give less weight to 9th grade marks.

in our school system its your semester grades that are counted towards your GPA.

Bumping…

Your guid counselor can give you an idea of a wide range of colleges to target. You’re not out of the running for college at all.

Semester grades generally do count towards your GPA, but at many, perhaps most high schools they are combined with second semester grades, which then gets you a final grade which is posted on the transcript. In other words a 1st semester C and a second semester A plus a good final exam grade might yield a student a B/B+/A- that shows up on the transcript the college receives.

Your school doesn’t do that so you have to deal with the cards you’ve been dealt. Obviously 3 Ds on the transcript isn’t good, but you’ve been doing what you need to do by improving your performance each year. If you can move the needle ahead even further first semster of your senior year there are certainly Top 50 schools that would be interested in you so long as the rest of your application looks good.

thanks for insight
