Is it impossible to transfer into the College of Design?

I'm pretty sure I'm going to get rejected from NCSU, so I thought I could go to Wake Tech and transfer into the Design school. A month or so ago, I went to a college admissions panel sort of thing and the woman there for NCSU said "You can't transfer into the Design college."

But on their website, they say you can.

So, if anyone knows, please help.

Thank you.

You can, I have a friend that did. But it took him two years of applying, and he was already an NC State student when he applied for the internal transfer.

It is possible, but be aware that acceptance as a Transfer student to the University, and acceptance into a COD studio-based major are not one and the same. The COD application process has a hard deadline for everyone that starts with the Nov 1st application deadline and goes all the way to March of the following year (if you keep making it through each stage). You are competing for the same spots in the entering class along with High School seniors. Even a transfer student will have to take 8 more semesters of studio-based classes if they are accepted.

Ah, so I’d have to sort of be a Freshman despite being a Junior?

Honestly, is NCSU really the ONLY place to get a graphic design degree?

PumpkinCake - you can earn a Graphic Design degree at alot of different schools – AppState and VCU are two nearby that come to my mind. Check them out, maybe their req’s aren’t as restrictive. Have you checked if Wake Tech’s Graphic Design program has any kind of precedent of helping students transfer credits into NCSU’s College of Design?

What you will encounter with NCSU “Studio” based degree programs is the strict progression of studio courses that must be taken to earn the degree. Studio classes require intensive time and effort and its very hard to rush them, or double-up in the same semester. For example: My D is a junior in the COD at NCSU and her Studio is a 6 credit hour class, but class-time is 9 hrs a week. She has another “normal” design class (3-D modeling) that is a 3 credit hr class, but class actually meets for 6 hours a week. None of this includes the time for assignments outside of class. And these classes could only be taken after going through similar “workaholic” courses last year. They all build on one another.

Sorry the news isn’t what you wanted to hear. But if your passion is Graphic Arts, then an extra year or two doing what you love, to earn that B.A., is time well spent. The credits that you can transfer as General Ed. may also help lighten your load, allowing you to focus on Design courses almost exclusively.

On a side-note: My D has a classmate who also had Jr standing at NCSU (working toward a CHASS degree I think), and tried for two years to transfer into the COD. He finally made it on the 2nd try. They were in Freshman Studio together, but he was actually a Junior academically. He’s still there completing his Studio courses, working his way now toward a double-major in the COD and the CHASS. It can be done…Good luck!
