Is it normal?

I just got my class schedule, course allocations and syllabi for all my courses. One of my courses is Literature and the world. I have 8 books that are required reading,8!. I was curious is that normal or slightly on the high side for a first semester introductory course?

My books are
Ovid, The Metamorphoses: A New Verse Translation
Hanan Al-Shaykh, One Thousand and One Nights
William Shakespeare, A Midsummer Night’s Dream,
William Shakespeare, Othello,
William Shakespeare, The Tempest,
Neil Gaiman, Sandman, Vol. 3: Dream Country,
Tayeb Salih, Season of Migration to the North
Aimé Césaire, A Tempest, trans. Richard Miller

and 2 movies Omkara and Forbidden Planet.

Yup, welcome to college. Btw, 8 books in one semester works out to about one book every two weeks. That’s completely doable and not at all excessive.

Looks a little light to me.

A book every 2 weeks actually is doable, I panicked when I saw such a long list of books, time management is something I should work on. this is just 4 out of 16 credits

It’s a literature class. This shouldn’t really be surprising…lol

This is actually a light reading list. Most of the items on your list are plays, not books.

And one is a graphic novel (the best ever written, but still…)

I agree that that reading list looks light. In any case, it’s manageable provided you stay on top of it. But that generally applies to any readings, or any work in general for that matter.

I haven’t had a literature class since grade 8. I had 2 books, to kill a mocking bird and Tom Sawyer, for the entire year. I really wasn’t sure what to expect. I got the books today and they are shorter than I thought. I’ve never done Shakespeare or any serious literature, so maybe that’s why I was a little taken aback.

I hope you enjoy your class. Be sure to take advantage of study sessions and or tutoring hours if available. You may be expected to write literary analyses of these works which could be challenging if you haven’t written essays of this type in high school.
