is it okay to get a 4 on an ap exam?

Freshman year, I got a 4 on AP World History.

Sophomore year: I think I will either get a 3 or 4 on AP Euro, and either a 4 or 5 on AP CS Principles.

Are 4s okay?

I plan to major in STEM, so would getting 4s on non-STEM APs be okay?

OK for what?

Will you get credit I college with a 4? It depends on the college. Will a college throw your application in the trash with a 4? No.

Yes. There is nothing bad about getting a 4.

A 4 is a great score.

The only time a 4 is bad is if you needed a 5 to skip a class/get college credit.

Some colleges give credit and placement (putting you in a more advanced class, if you want to keep taking courses in that subject) for either a 4 or a 5. Some even for a 3.

Some colleges only give credit and placement for a 5.

Some colleges don’t give credit at all for AP, only placement (you can skip the entry-level courses, but you still need to take a full 4 years of courses at that college to get the degree there). And some places let you skip entry-level courses if it isn’t your major, but want you to repeat their own freshman-level class if you are intending to major in that subject, but might give you some generic credits to count for overall total but not for your major.

If you are hoping to use your AP credits to graduate early for financial reasons, make sure to look at the AP policy for the colleges you are interested in. Otherwise, a 4 is a great score.

For most colleges, a 4 will be enough to award you credit or at least placement into a higher level class.

a 4 is basically a B in a class…that is usually high enough for colleges to give you credit.

Yes. Given that the purpose of AP tests are to give you college credit, and at most colleges a 4 will accomplish that – it is perfect. You should double check with the colleges you are looking at though to make sure they take those credits.
