Is it okay to use an extended metaphor in common app essay?

In my Common App essay (I did the first prompt, describe a significant experience) I used an extended metaphor. I originally felt pretty good about it but i hear a lot of people saying not to use metaphors and now I'm concerned. Is this true? Should I stay away from extended metaphors in college essay writing? Please help!! (:

I’ve seen essays that use extended metaphors get students into top 20 colleges.

I have no experience with college essays as I’m currently writing my own, but here’s my take:

Extended metaphors are beautiful… they’re just genius. I mean, if you can pull it off, of course. Professional writers do it. If you can make it sound good and bring the reader to truly get what you’re saying, I say go for it 100%

Honestly, I was really tempted to use an extended metaphor for my essay, but felt as if I wouldn’t be able to pull it off. If you have the confidence, and you can look at your essay and say you feel damn proud of what you wrote, I say keep it!
