Is it a good idea to use similes/metaphors on college essays or do they sound like you're trying too hard?

Example:
Math is like a well; initially, the bucket is empty but by the time it comes around, it is full.

That would be totally up to you to decide. It's really where you place the metaphors that's going to make the difference between an excellent and mediocre essay. Some essays are direct and straightforward while others are more flowery and elaborate. Both types of essays have gotten applicants into top schools. Just make sure the essays reflect your voice.

If the simile/metaphor flows with everything else you're writing and fits in well with what you're trying to tell the reader then, by all means, use it. If not... then don't.

Does your well metaphor make sense?... Am I just being stupid and not getting it?

i knoe the simile is really bad but i just had to think of one real fast it doesnt make much sense but thanks for your answers
