Hello everyone.
I’ve been thinking about making this post for a while, but I always feel so pathetic writing it that I never go through with it. In short, I’m going into my senior year with a near 3.4 GPA and I’m taking the SATs in early October. I feel that my only real redeeming attribute right now is a few community college classes I’ve passed with As that fulfilled some A-G requirements, and I plan to continue to do so through 12th grade while doing some volunteer work as well.
Now lets assume a best case scenario where I get a good SAT score (I’m hoping to get something in the ≥2000 range), manage to pull through enough A-G requirement classes at CC to cut out 2 years at college and go straight for my major (I’ve already killed a year =D), put in 100 hours+ of volunteer work at a hospital, and get a good essay in. What are my chances in getting in somewhere like UCLA, or Irvine? Likewise, what do you think would be more realistic in my situation?
Thanks for any input you can provide, its much appreciated!
UC’s are very GPA focused so even with an outstanding SAT it will not make up for a lower GPA. Go ahead and apply but have some solid match and safety schools on your list. Good luck.
If you’re a CA resident, you can take and pass the CHSPE, get parent permission to leave high school, then continue the year at a CC towards the goal of transferring. You would be applying as a junior transfer and need a minimum 30 CC semester UC transferable unitsto apply plus plans to complete 60 units comprised generally of IGETC and major prerequisites by the Spring before your transfer year.
If you apply as a high school student, your GPA is low for UCLA. You can report back with your SAT scores.
@brbrbrbrbr Students all develop academically at different rates and many have had an enormous amount of help along the way to becoming a top student. Think of yourself as a late bloomer and make a new plan. You can attend two years of California Community College, get good grades and join your classmates to graduate with a UC degree at the same time. There is no single or best path to success. (not to mention In California we are also blessed to have a lineup of amazing Cal States.) Think more about where you’d like to be after college graduation, and set your sites on a long term goals. Good luck!!!
With a 3.4, LA and Irvine are reaches, regardless of your SAT and ECs.
If you want to attend a UC, CC then transfer is your best bet. Of course, you’ll need to compete for your slot in a few years.
Apply to several schools - include a couple UCs and several CSUs. Look at Long Beach, Chico and Fulllerton, Cal Poly Pomona, as 4 good CSUs within your grasp. See where you get in - and make your decision in April, the world will look a LOT different then.
Good luck.
