Is it possible to accelerate your undergraduate years in state college?

Hello CCers,

I was just wondering if it is possible to go to most state/private colleges for 3 undergraduate years instead of the traditional 4 years provided that you bring in enough AP credit and attain "sophomore status/advanced standing".

Depends on your major and how many units you put into your semesters/quarters. Otherwise, why not?

Yes. I’m a sophomore with 15 hours left out of the 120 I need for my degree (I came in with ~70 hours from AP credit and community college courses). GRANTED, I’m a physics major so I still need to take all of the math and science courses to graduate, hours notwithstanding. I’ll graduate with around 200 hours if I stay an extra semester or so but at least I didn’t have to fart around with smelly gen eds.

Yes. For example, UW Madison takes many transfer credits (I came in with 33 of the 120 necessary to graduate). Some of these courses can take care of many of your gen ed requirements, too.

That said, I’m still taking 4 years because I tried a couple majors.

Most of the people I’ve met that came in with a bunch of AP credits ended up staying at least 4 years. The big state schools that take the most credits are also the one with the most options. It’s hard to rigidly stick to a three year plan without feeling shortchanged.
