I'm not at any risk of making a suicide attempt soon or anything. But I almost killed myself a few months ago (and for that, I was referred to mandatory 3-session counseling). I, however, know of someone who got forced into an indefinite sabbatical for a suicide attempt, however.

I think you could use the American’s with Disabilities Act as an argument against getting kicked out since the ADA defines disability as, "“a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits a major life activity”. In most autopsies done on those who committed suicide, there is a mental illness found. (You might want to check my facts on that one. I read it a few years ago, but can’t remember where.) So, for a university to kick a student out based on a suicide attempt they are discriminating against someone with a “mental impairment that substantially limits a major life activity”.

I’m not positive on any of this, mind you. I just quickly skimmed some articles to make sure my thoughts weren’t completely absurd.

I would be surprised if most mental illnesses showed up on an autopsy…

I don’t think so, I think you just get put into counseling. My roommate tried to kill herself a month or so ago, and she just had to go to therapy. They didn’t even tell her parents, which I thought was kind of stupid.

Goodness…GET HELP NOW! You need more than 3 therapy sessions if you “almost killed yourself” once and are now posting about suicide attempts on CC.

Some kids don’t adjust well to college and some have serious biological impairments in their brains (hormonal imbalances or chemical imbalances). Proper sleep, proper eating habits…balanced diet and lots of protein, bananas, apples, oranges…potassium stuff. And reduce stress by getting counseling in TIME MANAGEMENT.

Finally, TALK to professors. Go to office hours and shoot the breeze.

Talk to friends. Being alone and in a dark room and saying nothing is the WRONG thing to do. Depression is nothing shameful. Getting help is not admitting you are weak or something wrong with you. It means you are mature and taking care of yourself.

You can get through this. Things will get better. But you have to take the necessary steps to do so.

Okay thanks for the replies everyone.

it was really a reaction over a single event so I don’t think I’m at any risk of suicide anytime soon.

Chemical imbalances show up, I do believe.

It can happen if you’re deemed a risk to yourself or others. You can’t test mental health on autopsy, but you can find proximate causes TO things like depression. Brain lesions, hypo/hyperthyroidism, chronic injury, et cetera.

‘‘Chemical imbalances show up, I do believe.’’

No, they don’t

^do I know you from somewhere? o_0

I’m not sure if they look up chemical imbalances in autopsies but if they do it would be possible right? Cuz when you have depression you tend to have chemical and hormonal imbalances

Above poster- Lol ***, this is a joke right? You go to Berkeley?

Mental illnesses would be really difficult to find on an autopsy, BUT they can do a toxicity screen which would show antidepressants/anti-anxiety drugs (or really any other kind of drug).

If you’re talking/thinking about it, YOU ARE AT RISK.

There is nothing wrong with going to therapy. Please go talk to someone. College is the last time you’ll have access to FREE therapy.

I believe UCI (University of California, Irvine) doesn’t kick people out for suicide attempts. I read an article from their New University newspaper (which I picked up along the way when I went on a campus tour there) where there were gay/lesbian students who gave their own experiences of attempting suicide, but decided against it when their spirits were lifted by someone who stepped in to cheer them up. Those students are still attending school.

I did not tihnk that they would kick a student out…I was always under the impression that they would refer you to some help and conseling, but not ask you to leave entirely.

They probably would because it makes the school look bad ( especially a corrupt private school or Ivy).

As I understand it, they can force you to take a medical leave of absence if you’ve been deemed a danger to yourself.

However, the only person I know in a situation close to that also had grades bordering on probation. Plus, several people reported him because they were worried about him. (He has not been asked to leave, but has been required to get help).

They may ask you to leave for a semester. But if they haven’t asked you to leave yet, then they probably won’t.
