Hi!
I applied as a chemical engineer at UCI, UCSD, UCR, UCSC, UCSD, UCLA, Berkeley, SJSU, CSULB, and CPP. I will be graduating high school with 32-40 college credits (depending on the availability of classes) from community college courses. All of them are considered transferable credits for both CSU’s and UC’s and they are mostly general ed’s. I also have 5’s on both Spanish AP tests, the only ones I’ve taken. Since all of the schools that I have seen have the main major classes since the first quarter/semester I am not sure if it is actually possible to graduate earlier, and from my understanding it will only prevent me from taking those general ed’s in college. I am not too familiar with the topic, so any outcome is really appreciated. Thanks!
Some people do graduate early from college. Every college has its own rules about what credits they accept, how they get counted (electives or general ed requirements) etc. Some information may be available online. It could get a bit tricky with engineering as some of the coursework is sequential in nature.
@happy1 I see, so I wouldn’t know until I decide which college to attend?
You can try to get information online. And once you have your schools narrowed down you can try to speak with someone at the college. But I’m not all that familiar with the CA public college system so maybe someone will be able to chime in with more specific information.
@happy1 ok, thank you!
Much will depend what transferable courses will fulfill the GE requirements for your major. Neither of my son’s took any community college courses but both had a good amount of AP credit and I found the CSU’s to be far more generous with the credits than the UC’s.
@Gumbymom I think what confuses me the most is that people generally say that your first two years are for general ed’s, but from what I’ve seen on the school’s curriculum for my major is that I start since day one, which is the contrary ti what I’ve been told. So is this something that I will know before having made a decision?
When you get your pass times to register for classes at a UC, your “advisor” will let you know what gets credit and what doesn’t.
All 3 of my kids had huge AP credits. They all went to vastly different schools. My dd at the UC got earlier registration times and didn’t have to take some of the prerequisites. She received elective credit and graduated on time. My dd, who attended school in upstate NY, got elective credit and got out of prerequisites. My son basically got elective credit.
So, take it for whatever you want. They still want to see what you can do in their classrooms.
@“aunt bea” it’s a lot clearer now, thank you so much!
