Is it possible to have fridays off?

I am going to be a freshman in MCS this fall and by looking through the pulse scheduler I have noticed that most required courses(English 101,Intermediate Java) meet on MWF. This is disappointing, since I wanted to have Fridays off like most other colleges. Any advice fellow Tartans?

Also, do courses such as Physics I (<a href="http://www.tcpulse.com/psched/course/33111/%5B/url%5D">http://www.tcpulse.com/psched/course/33111/</a>) meet 5 times a week? What is the difference between the MWF and the TR sessions?

Thanks

the TR sessions are recitations, while MWF sessions are lectures

It is possible to have every day off by ignoring your alarm clock.

Most other colleges have Fridays off?

I had a friend who had fridays completely off, CS major though...

At CMU as a freshman it is very hard to get Fridays off. Most intro courses have lectures MWF, and (possibly) have recitations TR. While you can't get a three day weekend with Fridays off, you can get fairly light TR. Many of my friends had only one or two recitations on TR.

After freshman year, it changes, it seems. Most upper level courses (at least the ones I'm trying to take) meet for an hour and a half TR instead of an hour MWF. As a result, next year I have 6 hours of classes TR, but only 2 MWF.

Also, just so you know, physics courses (or at least physics for scientists) are notorious for actually taking attendance. You have to buy this clicker thing, which is like a remote, and you use it to answer questions in class. The professor can then use it to see if you were in class and/or give grades based on daily questions. Yucky.

I'm sure you'll survive without Friday off. :) I think it's more important to avoid 8:30 classes than have Fridays off.

o wow, is it like the TEAL classes at MIT. lol don't mean to sound like a prospie but that clicker class was cool.

If you do have an 8:30 class, fill it up with something easy... Calc in my case, for you it may be something else...

what's so bad about 8:30 classes, my first class starts at 7:00 in HS and that isn't that bad

anyways if I take Matter and Interactions I I'll have an 8:30, but hopefully I can place in Physics III which starts at 9:30

hehe..."what's so bad about 8:30 classes, my first class starts at 7:00 in HS and that isn't that bad". That's what you think when you're registering, but remember that almost every college student says to avoid the early classes.

I'm a morning person and I try to avoid 8:30s

As far as Fridays off, it's harder for freshman, and easier for upper level students. Also, CS classes generally don't start till 11:00 or noon...must be becuase they're up so late coding.

haha good luck, that class takes attendance too...

In college everyone around you is up late, whereas at home your family (probably) is in bed early. There were times that I wanted to go to sleep at 11 or 11:30 because I was sick or tired, but I couldn't because there was noise in the hallway and in the stairwell (I generally have trouble falling asleep) or I felt bad about making my roommate leave the room. Also, it didn't help that I worked until 10:30 some nights because that's when TAs/CAs have office hours because that's when students can actually come to them.

The clicker thing is annoying. However, if you want to buy mine from me, it's very available since I'd like to get back some of my $30 (unless Physics of Musical Sound requires it- anyone know?)
