Is it possible to learn a language in about a year and a half?

Hey guys.. I've been taking Spanish for 3 years and I love it. My dad (and his entire family)'s first language is French. Unfortunately, he didn't teach it to me along with English when I was little.

I'm wondering if you think it's possible to learn French in about a year and a half? Both of my parents speak it, it has many similarities to Spanish, and I already know some words and phrases since I've grown up around the language.. I love linguistics and French culture, so yeah. Thoughts?

Normally, I’d say no but since your entire family speaks French and you’re exposed to it all the time, it would be easier.

Then again, my mom moved to the US 18 years ago and her English still stinks. She didn’t really have to learn it for a job, though, so that may be why. But she was an adult, and I assume you’re a teenager, which would make it somewhat easier.

I’d say you’d do well if you commit to it!

YES YOU CAN!!! :P

Khatz (a guy) learned Japanese from 0 to fluent in 18 months.
I’m sure if you practice super hard, and immerse yourself in the language, you can.

Imma PM you :)

Thanks for your reponse! Well, I’m not exposed to it all the time… My dad speaks English at home since my stepmother only speaks English. I hear French when he talks on the phone with family and when we see his family (maybe 10x/year)

You could definitely be proficient in it in 18 months. You would have to completely immerse yourself in it though.

Yeah, if you have your family speak only French to you.

Theoretically and mathematically impossible.

Nah just playin. Anything is possible if you dedicate yourself. :)

You’ll have to spend a lot of time, but yes. French grammar is pretty much the same as Spanish.

Not unless you try to speak it 24/7…

i moved to the middle east when i was in the third grade …and i didn’t even know any arabic at all…i wasn’t even able to read out of the Qur’an. After a year or two i became fluent in reading then after sometime in writing…now i’m probably like 60% fluent in arabic…but it gave me such a hard time. I’m still working on improving it though. It also helped that i tried speaking the language with some family and relatives…and i’d watch arabic t.v. shows.

unless if you completely immerse yourself into the language it’s more difficult to master it completely. Like last year when i was in Somalia nobody spoke english over there so i was forced to speak the language 24/7 and i even improved my somali by a little bit (although im already fluent in it).

But it’s definitely possible in less than 2 yrs if you can put in the work :)

^ i also forgot to add that listening the arabic music ( stuff by nancy ajram, haifa wehbe, amir, & carole samaha usually) kind of helped me out.

@ CT: i thought your dad was morrocan…? shouldn’t he know how to speak arabic too?

good luckkk

I’d say no for an ordinary person, but you may be a linguistic type. Anyone see the guy on 60 minutes who learned Icelandic in three weeks? It was legitimately jaw-dropping.

If your family speaks to you with French then it’s very possible and likely you’ll become fluent in a year and a half. I remembered this article where it talked about how this guy learned Icelandic (supposedly the hardest language in the world) fluently in less than a month. But of course, he wasn’t the average person.

Is there a video of this guy? Just tried to look him up on Youtube.

If you lived in France and attended school there for a year and a half, I bet you’d become pretty close to fluent.

Google or type in Daniel Tammet on Youtube.

^ I read his book “Born on a Blue Day” in 7th grade. :)

He memorized like, 20,000 digits of pie. o.O

The world record is something like 60,000 digits from memory. There is something wrong with this world.

^ really? it changed? o.O that’s a lot.
my older brother, dad, and i had a contest…
We only got to like, the 50th place then it was boring.

My dad is Moroccan but speaks very little Arabic because he attended a French school.

Thank you for all of your opninions and ideas!
