I am currently in 10th grade, I would like to be an engineering in the future. I am currently in Algebra 2, and was in Honors Geometry last year. Last year was rough I barely passed Geometry and some other classes. I just moved across the country, so I am obviously at a new school. My previous math teacher recommended me for honors Algebra 2 Trigonometry. According to standardized test scores I am in the 96th percentile nation wide for math. This is my second week of school, do you think it is possible to appeal to a higher level? If not I will try to take a math course next summer to catch me up to the honors kids. By the way I am going to try as hard as I can to do well this year.

I forgot to mention that you cannot go from regular algebra 2 to pre calculus in my school. You would have to take analysis of functions.

The short answer is - yes, at most schools it is reasonable to ask. Discussing this with your guidance counselor and Math teacher(s) is appropriate and it would be common for a top 5% student to be in Honors Algebra 2 in 10th grade. Whether this is the correct decision for your case would be hard to tell, but that you are motivated now is a great sign. In the end though, you have to ask those with experience with your new school’s math program (the counselor and the math teacher(s) for these classes). What is the harm in asking? Even if they say no, they may be able to suggest other opportunities for you to challenge yourself and excel.
