Is it possible to request for a larger grant from schools?

I feel like I have not received to the full potential as I should have in terms of grant money. Rutgers is giving me $2,000 a year while University of Maryland is giving me $4,000 a year. Is there any way possible that Rutgers would potentially match/even surpass the amount that UMD is giving me? If so, how do I approach it?

Well, one thing to remember is that you do not deserve any grants from any schools (going off your term “should”), but that does not mean it is not possible to appeal your award from Rutgers.

You can talk to Rutgers, tell them UMD offered you a larger scholarship and see what they can do. At no time act as if they owe you anything or you deserve anything, because they don’t.

But don’t take this as an attack, I just want you to get the best package you can get!

You can always ask. But getting additional grant money is a tough go. Give it a try. Are you in-state for Rutgers? If you are, the bottom line cost would be less than it would be for UMD even with less of a grant from them. It’s what you have to pay, not what you get that is important.

These are state schools and don’t promise to meet need, so you aren’t owed any amount at all beyond Pell amounts. Most OOS publics aren’t going to give you much anyway.

Are you OOS for both schools or one?

Edited to add…I see you’re instate for NJ. You’re lucky to have gotten any money from UMD. Was that a merit scholarship or a Pell Grant or something?

you are swimming against the tide on this because it does not matter that UMD gave you 4k and Rutgers only gave you 2K. You are in state for Rutgers and 4K is like spit in the wind when you think about the OOS cost to attend UMD. The net-net is Rutgers is going to be less expensive and possibly the more financially feasible option for your family.
