Is it possible to self-study a few APs?

Hey CC! I’m going to be a junior next year and due to some scheduling errors, I’m only enrolled in 3 out of the 6 APs I asked for. My guidance counselor said I could self study the courses I want to take so I’m quite torn between the 3. The AP classes I wanted to take were AP Environmental Science (I’m already taking AP Physics, I wanted this class for fun rather than a science credit), AP Government, and AP Psych. Which 2 classes would be most logical to take? I’m taking APUSH next year so would it make sense to take AP Government and Politics and one of the other classes? My school offers AP Government and AP Psychology but I’d have to take it senior year and I don’t really want to wait. Also, stress isn’t really an issue for me so please don’t tell me to avoid self studying entirely!

PS. If you feel like responding, how long did it take for you guys to study for each of the exams? I heard psych isn’t very difficult so would it be possible to cram study the material 2 or 3 months before the exam?

PPS. I’m also looking to score above a 4 so would it be difficult to manage these classes?

Are they giving you high-school credit for this, or just letting you take the tests without the classes?

There’s really no reason to self-study unless you want college credit for these exams. If you can’t take the classes at your school, colleges don’t expect you to take them at all, and you’d be better off working on your ECs or studying for the SAT or something.

I took the AP US Government exam without taking the class. I got a 3 after studying the night before, which wasn’t high enough to get credit at my university. In retrospect, I would recommend at least a month for each exam. :stuck_out_tongue:

So I only get credit if I take the class + test or can I get credit by just getting a 4+ on the AP? Sorry about the questions, I’m just really confused :stuck_out_tongue:

Whether you get HS credit is up to your HS.

For college credit, you do not need to take the class, just pass the exam. However, all colleges have their own policy as to which score constitutes a “pass” and even then, not all colleges give credit for all exams.
