Hey all! I had a random thought concerning the financial aide process. Have any of you ever heard of transferring your financial aide package to some other prospective student if you do not plan on attending that specific institution? I'm curious... It seems logical that if the finances have been allocated to one student, why couldn't they be refused and transferred to another prospective student? Anyone have any experience with an issue like this?

All contributions appreciated! Thanks!

Nope. It doesn’t work that way. A school “overbooks” with the full knowledge that some kids are not going to be attending. So if someone offered a full ride decides not to go there, it is probably in the calculations that a number of such refusals will occur. it’s not until it’s all done that the colleges can see how close they were in the offers as the the actual yield.

The same goes with admissions acceptances. If a student decides not go to a school, that doesn’t mean a spot is now open for a WL kid to take. If the expected number of kids decline acceptance, then no one gets off the waitlist. The waitlist has movement only when more kids decline acceptance than the school anticipates. Financial aid packages can go to those on the waitlist if there are funds that come back. It’s not a one for one situation here.

Hmmm, I see. Thanks very much for clearing that up, cptofthehouse! =]
