I’m new admitted student @ Cal Poly SLO this fall and I have this plan which is transferring to UCB, UCLA or UCSD in the future. My major is Applied Mathematics and I want to change it to some Engineering major after I finish my first academic term. Is it possible to transfer to those UCs? When is the best time (Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, etc…?) to do transferring? What can I do for the transferring?
UC’s only accept Junior level transfers: 90 quarter units/60 semester units. If you are going into SLO with the intent to transfer, you would be better off going to a CCC and then transfer. CSU to UC transfers are definitely possible, but many of the CSU courses do not articulate well to the UC courses. If you use assist.org and attend a CCC for 2 years, you would have a higher priority, a list of articulated courses for the UC’s and save some money.
Cal State students have lower priority than CCC students. Those UCs only accept junior transfers so you’d apply during your sophomore year that you’d finish at least 60 semester units by that Spring. These units include meeting major prereqs and GEs for the major you’re applying to.
CCC students have priority and they use Assist.org to help meet requirements to transfer.

great information! thanks.
Besides, it is perhaps easier to maintain a good GPA (for the purpose of a successful transfer) in a cc than a competitive school such as the one you are intending to attend for now.
CP SLO is an outstanding school. For most people, its smaller size and hands on approach make it a better place to learn than someplace like UCB or UCLA. I’d suggest you attend, smile and make the most of your experience. If, after Freshman year, you still want to transfer, there is no harm in applying to another school. Just don’t go in with that outlook, you won’t join clubs or make the most of the community.
If you head to a CC, you should understand your odds of admission from a CA CC are about the same as they were from a CS high school. - about 1 in 5, The lowest transfer GPA to Cal this year was 3.66 - which ain’t easy at the college level.
